View Full Version : How Much Tin to add to W/W to get 2% ???

Have some ¼ lb pure tin ingots , & 3 -10lb pots full of fluxed W/W.. To achieve the commonly recommended 2% Tin for good mold fillout , what would be the amount by weight that it will take ??? Math Gurue's to the rescue Pls.. Russ.

Tks "semtav" , might just add the whole 4 oz ingot & call it Good... Russ..........
I would try it @ 1% and see if that's enough.
Some molds you don't need to add any tin.
Tin is expensive.

2.5 oz of pure tin added to 10 lbs of clip on WW gives you:
2.03% Tin, 1.97% Antimony, @ hardness 11
Although I don't think you actually need to go all the way up to 2% to get good mold fillout. I would just try casting a few as-is. If it doesn't work, add it a little at a time until you get up to 2.5 oz.

ww's usually have about .5 tin to begin with.
i only add tin when i need the alloy strength for hunting.
if you look closely at a ww it has little numbers/letters on it that were cast there.
Should you have a reloading scale then 7000 grains equals a pound. WW having about 1/2% of tin already.................1.5% of 7000 grains or 7000 X .015 = 105 grains
1% of 7000 grains or 7000 X .01 = 70 grains
measure out 105 grains for each pound of WW alloy which will yield 2% tin
or
measure out 70 grains for each pound of WW alloy which will yield 1.5% tin
etc. etc.
your 1/4 lbs tin ingots = 1750 grains
for 10 lbs of WW alloy (already has .5% tin) to reach a total of 2% you'll need 1050 grains of tin
for 10 lbs of WW alloy (already has .5% tin) to reach a total of 1.5% you'll need 700 grains of tin
Also, some more info: 437.5 grains = 1 ounce
