View Full Version : Die set up tooling

I have designed a die set up tool that can be shimed using machinist washers. This would allow dies to be screwed in the press until it stopped by touching the die set up piece which could be shined in various thicknesses.

This would allow various length sizing to be done and always return to a previous setting.

I could get quotes on having a group buy done if people would be interested.

It would look like a shell holder and be in two pieces. The bottom half would snap into your press ram and the top is a cup that will be placed over the bottom half. It would come with a shim kit containing the following shims .001", .0015", .002", .003", .004", .005", .006", .007", .008", .010", .012", .015", .020", .025", .031", .047", .062", .093", .125".

I am just testing the waters, but I did make a example using my lathe. I just want to see if it's worth my time getting a machine shop to quote this and what kind of volume could be available for selling these.

I'd like more info on your "set up piece". A dummy or machined round? Or like a precision Snap-Cap?

Sounds cool, but I believe we need more info.

I added some details above, let me know what you think.
Thanks

I can't figure out why I would need such a thing? I have not needed one for 50 years and probably don't need it now.

"Whatever it is, I have not needed on for 50 years and probably don't need it now."

Ditto.

I've never found die set up to be difficult but it seems so for a few folk so...maybe. ??

I haven't any need for super precise case forming or bullet seating. Mebbe bench rest shooters?

I use a Hornady .22 neck size die to load everything from 22 K-Hornet to 220 Swift AI. The setup takes about 2 minutes to change calibers.

I prefer to have a setup that works by "dead length"....I want a shellholder to be in contact with the die when the shoulder is being bumped, otherwise I would not expect any kind of consistent results.

Timmy... I applaud every effort to build a better mousetrap or whatever. American was formed on such creative thinking. However, I think this idea died in it's cradle.

Thanks for your support of my creative thinking. I did have another idea that didn't do so well here, but I did get to sell one on ebay. I just need to make some more to see if those will sell too.

There's one thing I'm good at in life, and it's "creative" ideas.....everyonce in a while they even work.

Thanks everone for the honest replies and voting on the poll. I do have a couple other ideas that I think would be better for me to start out with selling before this one. I have a manual flat and vee belt lathe with a single tool post latern, turning out things in volume just isn't there for me right now.

Hopefully in a couple more months I might be posting another crazy idea for everyone to look over!

Thanks again for all the answers and happy shooting!
Tim

I don't remember the actual number, but Edison tried many, many things that didn't work, before he stumbled accross how to make a light bulb that did work. Keep plugging away, you will do it yet.
