I made a die to draw down 9mm brass to .355'' to use for 38 jackets for a buddy. The problem
I have is with the first try I used a 5/16'' punch and the case stuck to it. I turned the punch down to 1/4'' and now the cases enter the die cocked.
What is the proper shape?

Delta you may want to just round and taper the end of the punch just a bit. It may be hanging up inside the case where it tapers in on the inside (tapers in near the base of the case)

Can you run the case into the die mouth first and push against the base with a flat tipped punch? The direction it enters the die should not matter that much.

One way to make sure it enters straight would be to make the entrance of the reducing die so the case just fits in it then taper the die to the desired diameter. Once the case or jacket is in the nested part it can't tip before it enters the tapered section. A small flat on the end of the punch will help too.

I use a homemade punch of +/- .308 inch thick with a a rounded and tapered end to match the inside profile of a 9mm case. I size to .354 using a slightly modified Dillon 9mm tapercrimp die. The cases come off the punch reasonably easy.

With BT's suggestion and Some guidance from Lathesmith,
I used a chop saw on a 280 Rem FL size die
and a small belt sander on a grade 8 bolt 1/4x28
for a redneck case sizer for sizing a cutoff 5.7x28 case
down to .304 for jacket for .308 bullets.
I left plenty of lead so the case/jacket will not go crooked
even it the base bunch isn't perfect...which it isn't

Maybe this will give you an idea or two.

btw I am not a machinist and I don't play one on TV

i found it best when making a draw die to make the first 1/4 to 5/16 inch of the die the exact same dia.(+.002/3) as the outside dia. of the copper/brass you want to draw down, then start your taper to the dia you want...that way the copper/brass is nested along the sides before it enters the taper and has less of a tendency to go crooked....hope this helps....bill

yeah that upside down idea is awesome.

I made a new punch and remachined the die mouth, it was off center. I used a drawn case pushed part way into the die with hand pressure and trued it to .0005'' and recut the 10*taper it the mouth of the die. BINGO! Works like a charm.
Punch is .270'' at the top and tapers down to .300''.
