The wife and I just returned home after 16 hours and 440 mile RT hunt. We had purchased 6 antlerless mule deer surplus tags(3 each, limit was 7 each) All six tags were filled by dark, 5 with 30/06 Ackley Imp and one with the Springfield in 30/30 cal. , brass was garbage can RP(range pickup) boolit was Lee C-.309-170F(17) FC 210M primer,30.0 grs WC846, C RED lube, 2.575 IN OAL, 2026 fps
Range was 120 yds+/-? Boolit hit LOw in the rib cage, missed heart but got lung, deer "rodeoed" at the shot and ran, it covered about 100 yds before laying down, was bled out when I got there.

Was the load listed for the 30-30 or the AI. I'm guessing 30-30 from the OAL.
I will be out this PM and tomorrow morning and hope I can make meat!
Warmed back up to "WARM" too warm to hunt, but I'd best make do with what I have.

Good work, what's the Springfield rifle look like?

mick; do you know what a Savage Model 340 is? Well they are the same rifle by a different brand name, a bolt action carbine with a detachable magazine, this one is the economy grade with a stained birch stock, I picked it up this summer at a going out of business sale for 67.00, one of my better deals! I will see if I have a picture stored of it. Scot

snapped these- 20 " bbl, split bridge type reciever, locknut/barrel arrangement and barrel band, it is drilled and tapped for a side mount. This will give you an idea of what 67 US clams can get you!

A rifle for the working class man! It would clearly bring home the bacon (or venison) and keep a family fed, I like these sort of rifles. Mick.

Yup, the bacon is home this year forsure! Freezer holds 600 lbs? Making plans for next years hunting season- life. About 120 lbs of that was taken with cast boolits. The smoker is running as we speak.

Here's a picture of the damage done by one 170 gr Lee cast FN started at 2026 fps. Entered front of right leg(our bicep) then between ribs, lungs, hit rib on the way oyt, into offside front leg about an inch- boolit not recovered. Wasn't in the left front when butchered, probably fell out when the deer ran, and it ran, staggeered about 100 yds. So it penetrated hide-3 in meat-hide- bottom of lungs-rib-hide-hide and an inch of meat, not that far on a deer, about 12 inches. What I find peculiar is the amount blood shot meat between the onside front shoulder and rib cage(especially at this range-120 yds-longest cast boolit kill ever made bye ne)- looks worse than it really was, but definately not eating right up to the hole. The 22 Bator had similar looking effects, tho not as extensive. One of the "old" members suggested that maybe the boolits were coming apart, 17BN, but I never saw evidence of it- looked like one hole and on the offside appeared to be an inch. I was thinking meplat effect- since I'm used to Rn pencil holes> OK xspurts explain.
