What is the purpose of the dark circles at the end of the revolver cylinder? One of my cylinders only has 4 of the five holes with dark circles. any wisdom here on the subject?

Are you talking about the cylinder throat that sizes the bullet before it enters the barrels forcing cone?

no this is outside the cylinder. It is where the bullet exits, but it is on the outside of the cylinder. Take the cylinder out and look at it. There is a circle around each cylinder hole.

If you don't have one of those circles on the front of one chamber, you did not shoot it as much as the others. Don't worry about it at all, it is just carbon and is cosmetic only. If you want to remove most of it, M-Pro 7 and a brass brush will make it look better but once you shoot again, it is back.
Fact of life for the revolver!

There rings have no purpose. They do have a cause.

slug the throats. the one with no ring may be a little bit larger or smaller than the others. nothing serious, but it will throw your groups off. it mostly indicates a throat thats not identicle to the others.
