has anyone been able to propely lube a TL bullet in a Lyman 450 or Star lube sizer. All my molds are tumble lube and have had no sucess at all trying to apply a soft lube with my Lyman 450. I was using Speed green at the time, maybe I could not see the lube. My eyesight not that great.

selma fan how many lube hole do you plug if any. Problem i think i have with the 9MM lee tumble lube to cover all the micro grooves, the over all length is to short IMO.

On the 10mm dont seem to have that problem..

I just dont like tumble lube . wind up with wiping every one. have five tumble lubes molds that i can get rid of. Can find a replacement for the RD so will keep that one.

Go ahead and put you in an order at Midwayusa for a Lyman base heater and then build ya a little dimmer box and you will be in heaven. I have had my Star for a while and I just recently hooked up my Lyman base with a dimmer box and it is ALL that it is cracked up to be.

There is really no need to fill ALL of the tumble lube grooves. If you can successfully fill just a couple or three of them in a typical lube/sizer, you'll "be good to go".

I have lubed many RD bullets in my Star. Never a problem.
Dale is right, don't need to full all the grooves. Many of my bullets are 3/4 filled at best. Never seemed to matter at all

aaah . learned something new. regardless still glad i sold the 9 and 10 mm molds. On revolver lee TL can use a micro groove for a crimp groove.

I plug the top row of holes. I've only lubed RD-359-190-RF and RF 311-165-RF and they always filled perfectly. I do heat my speed green up in the 4500 with the heat lamp so it flows easily.

The dimmer box is just a way to control the heat so the lube doesn't melt too much. It's just as the name implies, a dimmer switch/rheostat (like the kind you use in your house). How you hook it up depends on your particular needs/wiring.

Or you could buy something like this: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=278

...assuming that the wattage/amperage rating of the dimmer is sufficient for your heater.

The advantage of the rotating dial of the typical room light dimmer is that you can apply marking for the optimum setting and hit it without fooling around.

You just need a light dimmer (rheostat), an electrical box (I prefer plastic as it is shockproof for use sitting on or near your bench top), a short three wire cable and a plug along with an outlet. Just wire it up so you plug your heater into the box, the box line into the wall outlet and adjust for best results.

I happened to have a Dremel speed control and that is what I use (it is just a rheostat in a fancy box with an on and off switch.

If you would rather use a commercial product, this is a good one:

You don't really have to worry about the capacity. My Lyman sizer/luber heater is less than 100 watts (If I remember correctly, only about 40 watts).

Thanks all fo the info

Always wondered if you had star die with hole spacing as close as you get it it wouldn't do the trick if you wante to lube all or nearly all the grooves. If I get 2/3 of the groove with lube, I'm happy I haven't had problem but they're low velocity

Althought I don't tumble lube anymore, and never will again, I have tried to lube them in a 450 I use to have. Works best if you have a die that is the same size as the as cast boolit so that you are not reducing the size of the lube grooves an more than they are, they are small enough to begin with. A die for a Star could be made that will lube all the grooves but I can't see the logic in doing so.
