Hello all,

First off, I'm a long time lurker, please forgive me! I started working up a 357 mag load for a Ruger Blackhawk today using H110 and the Lyman 358477 boolit, and when I started seating the boolit to what I thought was the crimp groove, the OAL was 1.590". The Lyman manual I was working up the load by lists the OAL as 1.510". I thought that the groove I was going to crimp in might actually be another grease groove, so I tried to seat the boolit in such a way that I would be crimping over the front driving band, but that would leave the OAL too short.

My question is, where to you people who load this boolit seat too, and what overall cartridge length? H110 is supposedly particular about load density, and I don't want to leave too much airspace in the loaded cartridge.

I seat the 358477's on the front crimping groove but I usually use 231 or WST which is of course for slower velocities. If your 110 causes you trouble from too light of a load, it will go "foof" and maybe or maybe not force the bullet out of the barrel so make sure you check to see that it did before firing another round. Also the case will have burned powder in it that resembles a carbon honeycomb. Other than that, no problem.

Thanks for the reply, Old Caster. I don't think I loaded too light, I started at the minimum of 16.3 gr. and worked up to the 17.0 gr. load recommended in the Lyman 4th, I just wonder why the OAL is listed for this cast bullet so short. The OAL's for the other bullets (boolits?) are more in the 1.580" range. Could it be a misprint?

Just loaded and measured some earlier today. 1.595 over 3.5 grains of 700x, out of a Rossi lever which really liked it.

Tried a few out of a 6 inch Taurus 66 and they were very accurate at 25 yards.

Planning to try H110 in the next few weeks, let us know how it works out.

I crimp in the crimp groove. Whatever that makes the LOA, works for me.

I do it like MtGun44 and don't care what the overall length winds up being as long as the bullet doesn't stick out the cylinder or touch the rifling in a non revolver enough to cause trouble. If you put the 358477 in to the crimp groove, does it measure the same as is listed. I have even shot 200 grain GC RCBS bullets in my model 10 while shooting IDPA. It was easy to achieve power factor with slow powder without much recoil.

358477 has a short nose of about .300".
In a revolver I like to keep the bullet back from the cylinder face by .050" to prevent lock up from bullet jump. . Also like to get the front drive band into the cylinder throat enough to align the bullet. Not what I’d look for in a combat round but for accuracy it can help sometimes. If you’ve the correct bullet for the caliber you are loading for then it’s crimp grove will be placed to align with the SAMI chamber specs.

I use that combination with an OAL of 1.575 inch. I use 15.5 grains of H110, which is less than the minimum according to your post. I have shot this load for years, but will still do some more checking on the minimum suggested grains.

I crimp slightly above the crimp groove.
I can measure the OAL later tonight.
I load 5.5 grains of Unique. This is a HOT load that I use in my Model 28.
For standard loads 4.7 to 5 grains of Unique is a good load.
You will find that most people that use Unique with the 358477 load it with 5 grains.

According to the current data, 5.5 grains is hotter then +P so I consider this load kinda like a 38 sp mag load.
I wouldn't shoot this in my Jframe 38 but I have shot it in severl standard S&W 357 mag revolvers. Please note that if you have a rossi or some other non-big name gun you may run into issues with a 5.5 grain load.

As I recall, the Keith designed 358429 was designed for 38 Sp brass and if seated to the crimp groove in 357 brass was too long for most revolvers. 358477 was designed to solve this problem and should work fine seated to the crimp groove in 357 brass. This is my recollection and someone will speak up if it isn't so.

Thanks again for the replies! I'll shoot them over my chrony when it quits raining and see how they do. Also loaded up some 357 with Blue Dot while I'm waiting on the weather to clear to compare velocity and accuracy with the H110.
