Hello. Trying to find some loading data for my 45-70 pedersoli sharps rifle. I would like to use Swiss or Goex BP with 500 to 535 gr bullets and rem brass. Do you all have any loading info this rifle . Also is there any good book with 45-70 load data. Thanks

pick your favorite primer,70 grs of 2f,.030 fiber wad and seat the bullet to the driving band.
Use something like a lyman m die or specific powder compression die to compress the powder enough to seat the bullet so the base of the bullet and the wad are in firm contact with the powder charge.
Don't crimp the cases any more than necessary to remove the "bell" on the case mouth.

In addition to Don's good recommendation, expand the case mouth 0.001 to 0.002 (down to the length of the seated bullet) smaller than the OD of the bullet base

I've heard theres some bp loads in either the Lyman Blackpowder handbook or the 49th reloading handbook. There was some data in the #47 under the Ruger #1 data.
Goex has data on their site. There might be others, but I'm not aware of them.

velocities - 70 grains of powder will fly your 535 grain bullet at about 1150 fps.
ballistics - If you sight the gun in for 100 yards, you'll need to hold over about a foot to be on at 200.

There is some data in the lyman Black powder manual but there are so many loadsm rifles, barrel lengths out there that the only way to know what you are getting is my chronoing your own loads. The load I was shooting today that shoots well in my Pedersolli is a lyman 457124 sized .459 over 65 Grains of Shutzen FFG with an .035 vegi wad and a winchester LRP. The bullet is seated leaving the last lube groove exposed and chronos at 1210 at 15 feet. However, there is no guarantee that it will shoot well in your rifle. Most peapol looking for reloading data are thinking smokeless powder. Beleive me when I say that there is no way to get too much black powder in a 45-70 case with any weight bullet. What you need to play with is powder compression ( no air space allowed), primers, bullets, alloys, wads and any other combination of things that will work for you. But to get started just put between 60 and 70 gr of powder in a primed case. Compress the powder enough so that you can seat the bullet deep enough so that it is almost touching the rifling, seat the bullet and go make smoke. You will find it very adictive.

Using Goex 2f and RCBS 530 gr. bulleth from ACWW, I compress 70 grs. .500 (half an inch) in Remington brass full length resized with an oatmeal box wad .025 and the case expanded with an RCBS (cowboy) expander that puts .002 neck tension on the bullet. This load will win any match if you put all the bullets in the 10 ring.

Try www.the45-70book.com and the Lyman cast bullet handbook 4th edition. These should provide you with published loads and are good reading to boot.

Jacob7 My bad. I must have had my head mislocated. The Gun Digest Black Powder Loading Manual by Sam Fadala was the book I should have recommended not the Lyman cast bullet handbook. Sorry for the lapse of common sense. Good shooting.

Hello I have been using, CCI Primers, 60 Grains Swiss No3. A thin Card and a Lee 405 Grain Hollow based Bullet. I am now using the 535 Grain Lyman Postel Bullet. Both successfully, although the Lyman is better at long distance in High Winds.I use my own made Duck fat Lube which holds in the canelures good and a Blow Tube to keep the fouling moist.
Tried some FOA Powder using the same loadings, Still good but a little more elevation needed on the Back sight.

I use the l33 500 35, 63 gr f f, and 2 newspaper wads and a milk containrer wad. newspaper wad is between bullet base and milk carton wad. IMO, the newpaper won't allow the milk carton wad to stick to bullet base.
