I have accumulated about 10lbs of solder. I don't know the purity and it could be 60/40, 40/60, or any of the others. The question I have is if I treated it as 40/60 and added according to that ratio and it ended up being more concentrated would the extra tin be problematic in my alloy?

Nope, just a waste of expensive tin

If you treat it as 40/60 (40% tin) and it's really 60/40, you would be wasting tin at a relatively high rate. If you treat the solder as 50/50, your miscalculation will be lessened.

I suppose starting out estimating higher than lower and experimenting may yield results which will help me decide how much to add. Meaning to say add little by little until I get good fill out.

Thanks guys.

Melt it all down together into ingots. Then determine the hardness and blend it in to your favorite alloy

i treat unknown like that as 50-50.
i have some solder that is 20-1 it stays well marked and on another shelf.

That's what I would do.
