Just about got the deal together, $AU500, good condition. Keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry, no pics at this stage.

How long age did they stop making 30-30s?

Good luck on getting your 99. $500 US would be a super deal these days for one that was rode hard and put up wet. I don't know were to find when a caliber when in or out of production but at http://www.savage99.com/savage99_dates.htm you can enter your SN and get a year of mfg. The .30-30 TD I recently aquired was made in 1918 and my .250 was from 1955.

Mick:

According to my 1995 3rd Edition of Doug Murray's "The Ninety-Nine", the .30-30 was first chambered in 1900, and last chambered in the 99EG and 99T models introduced in 1935; it was not chambered in the 99F which was introduced in 1955. So, somewhere between those dates; I would suspect they dropped the chambering when they got into WWII production and never resumed it after the war.

Mick: check the contour of the rear face of the breech block. Early ones were square , later ones were radiused. The square faced ones have a reputation of occasionally cracking at the sharp corners of the receiver. I wouldn't pass one up because of that if it was not already cracked. In fact I have one and love it. But, I don't push reloads to max with it as a prevention. Great cast boolit rifle.

I started memorizing gun catalogues in 1947, when the other kids were memorizing batting averages. At that time, Savage 99s were made only in .250 Savage and .300 Savage, so that narrows the .30/30 window a little bit. I do remember Mr. Barrett down the street had a .30/30 M99. I was amazed that there was such a thing. He gave me a huge stack of old Outdoor Life magazines, and Jack O'Connor turned me into a gun nut!

The rifle is located in the town I worked in recently, some 170miles away. The dealer ther also works part time, so it makes getting together a bit difficult. I haven't seen the rifle for a while, but from memory it is in pretty good condition. Now I have the grand ol' 94 with the oct barrel in 30-30 and the really nice Glenfield in 30-30 on lay-by, which one will I give the chop to? Mick.

Shucks, Mick, that's really easy! NOA, also known as "None Of the Above!"

Chances are good the new (to you, anyway) one will shoot quite well one of the boolits that the other two don't like! Thus no reason to get rid of a mould you already have.

That's the story I've used, and I'm sticking to it!:-D

Yep, I passed one up 15 years ago at a gun show. Savage lever in 30-30. Had a cresent butt plate and maybe an octagon barrel. Undrilled and untapped, buckhorn rear sight. I had never seen one in 30WCF before and have not seen another since. At $200 USD was a bargain looking back.:(

I was afeered you' all were gonna say something like that :-)

I'm still hanging out for a 788 Remington in 3030 (actually, I'd like two, one to convert to 30-30/35 or maybe 35 lever power. I'm a sickkkkkkkk man!

I bought a 99 in .30-30 several weeks ago at an auction for $300. Used but not abused. It was made in 1921 and has the crescent buttplate and a 26" barrel. I just ordered brass and dies for it so I haven't shot it with cast yet. I did shoot it with Winchester 170 gr factory ammo and it was impressive. Just like my 99 in .300 Savage. I took the tang sight off my .300 and put it on the .30-30. It looks much better there.

I couldn't find the reference I was looking for but I think Savage chambered some rifles in .30-30 into the mid 1930s.

The .30-30 began in 1905 and was discontinued in 1941. Models so chambered includes models: A, B, C, F, CD, H, K, EG, T.
That is certainly a deal and please post pix so the model can be determined. -JDL

G model takedown with 20" barrel as well. I used to have one. I believe a distibutor also had some uncatalogued R models made in 30-30 sometime during the 30s as well.

Good luck with your purchase and I'm of the group that would say "buy all three" plus the 788s you are looking for!!! No restraint from this fellow!

Every decade or so, a large ranch in my area will open it's gun room for an inventory reduction. They only invite local law enforcement officers to attend the sale. My best friend, a Game Warden, went and bought a rifle. It was a Savage 99 in 30-30 and it looks as though in was just pulled out of the box... $225!!! I'm not sure of the model or year as he will hardly let me look at it as the first thing I tend to want to do to a rifle is hammer a fish sinker down the barrel :holysheep

Rufus, How could I have overlooked the G as it was my very first 99? -JDL

JDL, I've been studying Savages for a couple years and I don't even think of leaving the house without my copy of Murray's book on the 99. There's just too much for anyone to remember!

Why not get the rifle first ant then check the numbers? That is, if you really want it. Someone else may beat you to it. Some things are worth going on a diet for a couple of weeks. The 99 is harder to find than the 788 or, marlin 336.

Mick, did you ever pick that 99 up? If so, got pics? :D
