Does anyone know of any model 92 conversions to a 475 Linebaugh or a 500 Wyoming express? Can it be safely done considering the limitations of the rifle? My 92 in 454 Casull has give me no problems, something bigger and badder with a heavy WFN cast bullet interests me.

You cant do it on a 92 action. The OAL is too long.

Thinkin' Puma has done some .480 Ruger '92's but that's as big as I've heard of.

That, they did. I have a buddy who has one. he also has one in .454.

saz, thanks for the information. I had to grin when I read the comment you include at the end of your replies. You know, the one in bold print? I mentioned a 475 and/or 500 WE cartridge to a buddy of mine when were were at the range shooting my 92 454 Casull, and pretty much he told me the same thing. The 454 and him weren't getting along very well that day. "Rifle's too dang light, cartridge is too dang big, and you can call me a dang pansy if you want". Anyway, if I can't do it in a model 92, do you have any opinions on a 94 or a marlin? The only reason I specifically mentioned those two cartridges is they are the ones offered in a FA model 83 revolver.

Wouldn't work in a marlin 94 biggest that will go is .50AE, the winchester 1894 will not handle the cartridges you want eather. You could probably do it with an 1886 win.

or just buy one. http://www.bighornarmory.com/, probably the cheapest and easiest way in the end.

Or a 1895 marlin in 50 alaskan. http://www.leverguns.com/articles/anderson/50_alaskan.htm

You want fatter bullets in a pistol caliber? go the 50 AE route IMHO, heres your barrel ready made (no affiliation to the company), http://www.montanarifleman.com/, its on special.

it can be done. I have a 475 94 marlin that Rob Applegate built for me. The weak link in it is that when rechambered the area in the chamber where the barrel threads are gets a bit thin. I stay away from max loads and try to keep pressure down below 40000 psi but even at that level it will shoot a 400 to about 1500 fps and a 360 to 1600. Plenty enough power for about anything that walks. Basicaly it gives me guide gun power in a gun that weights 2 lbs less. Rob said it was a total pain in the but to build and isnt interested in ever building another. I think it was ben forkin that was building the 50ae 94s. I 92 has a long enough action for a 475 as its the same lenght as a 454. I dont know if youd run into the same problem with the barrel threads or not though. I have to guess that if it can be done in 50ae it can be done in 475

That is good to know loyd. I was looking into the idea of picking up a puma 92 in 480 ruger and converting it to 475, but the couple of gunsmiths I spoke to said that it couldnt be done. The idea still intrigues me. I have a 454 puma and I am still impressed with it, but I am not sure I would be gaining a whole lot more with the linebaugh. Still if it could be done I would be interested.

I stupidly bought a Rossi 480 Ruger and can say this about that rifle. First, the headspace was .025 over maximum. After firing 26 rounds of ammunition the headspace increased anothe .013!!!!! And there is no way to rechamber to 475 and have it function. except as a single shot.

frank what is the reason it wont work. I dont understand as they make them work in 454 and that case is the same lenght. a rossi puma in 454 is nothing but a 92. It works in my 94 marlin and that action is shorter. It took some relieving of the ejection port and some other parts but it is done and working.

Well Lloyd, i may not be the sharpest pencil in the drawer, but when the action stretched .013 I quit fooling with it. Something about 30 to 40 thousand psi next to my face makes me a little cautious. We did some serious looking at coverting it to 475 but did not think it could be done. I do not remember why now. Hows Al?
