n o $ for a custom mold. what can I use for hunting deer in Mo? I want it on the heavy side 180 or bigger. A large metplate would be nice. Needs to be .312 or larger.Sized to .311 is what my model savage 30-06 110 loves, but the155 lee sks boolit is not going to get it for deer.

Would prefer something I do not have to beagle or open up. A larger dia that needed sized down once or twice would be fine.I do not plan on pushing this boolit long distance or very fast, maybe 100 yards at 1800 fps.

I have read and learnerd tons from you guys. Thanks .

Mark

after I get it,cast it, load it,shoot it, I will post some pics

RCBS 180 fp is what the search engine and I will tell you.

If you could find someone to part with their Lee group buy 311-190FP mould, you would have a winner. So far, it looks good in an '06 and a 308. If you can't find one, then I would lean towards a 30-180fp RCBS mould, but mine only casts .311"

I am a big fan of the Ranch Dog TLC311-165-RF. I size them to .309 and .310 to use in 30-06, 308, 30-30 and 30 Herrett. Big, fat meplat for dropping deer.

I suggest taking some time in the hunting part of the forum, and see the results with various boolit designs. Most work good!

Yes Sir, backed by Pats checks & 30gr of IMR4895 and away they go.

The RCBS 30-180FN would fit the bill, but the .312 part will be a problem. My 30-180FN drops them right at .3105-.311 in my alloy. I shoot them as cast (no sizing) in a variety of 30 cal rifles.

I'll cast my lot with the RCBS 30 180 FN as well. Like Bret, mine drops .310-.311" and weighs in at 194gr. as cast. I've gotten very good accuracy from it so far in my .30WCFs, (about the same as jacketed). It's promising in my .308WCF M-70 FWT. And does well in my .30-06. I'm not getting the same level of accuracy in my bolt guns with it as I get with Lyman 311299, or 311332, but then, they're not flat nose killers either.

Here's a link to Junior's articles on flat nose boolits, he uses them in .30WCF but it's the same .30 boolits. http://www.castbullet.com/reload/meplat.htm

311284 When you are limited by max lead velocity you need the most weight you can get. This with 40 to 50 gr slow powder 4831 or 4350 makes a very good hunting load.

I have used the Saeco 180 FN with some success, and like the boolit, but mine is very fussy about alloy. A little bit off, and the gas check shank comes out too large to cram a gas check on, so I have been kind of thinking about getting a different mold for that purpose. I do have the Lee C-309-170-FN, and that is producing some nice boolits now that I have it tweaked in better. ( the spue plate didn't fit well, and there were some burrs on the cavities, etc. )

I'd look for a 311284, 31gr of IMR3031 in an -06 will net around 1800fps.

I like it. :)

Put an acorn nut on the end of a bolt (1/4" IIRC), flatten the dome of the acorn nut a bit nut with a file or grinder and you have a gas check flaring tool.

You said you don't have the money for a custom mold. But, have you considered Accurate Molds? The price for a single cavity aluminum mold is $74.00--shipped. This is about the same as RCBS and Lyman molds when you consider you'd have to pay for shipping. Plus you could get the diameter you need.

That sounds like a good idea, I will definitaly give it a try! I've got about 700 of those boolits cast up that are a bit fat in the gas check area.

I like the RCBS 180. That was the only boolit I ever killed a deer with so I can't compare it with anything else. I was using it in a vintage 1925 25" barreled Mod 94. The MV was between 1750 and 1800 FPS. It took two shots "my fault" both shots went all the way through with a half dollar exit hole. The shots were at 80 yards. The second shot went through 3 vertabres the deer was up hill at about a 45 degree angle and facing up hill and at an angle to my shot. My alloy was WW and a little tin. The boolits were dropped from the mold into a 5 gal. bucket of cold water. I'm guessing at the BHN but they were probably 18 to 20 BHN. I still use that same boolit for the long range cowboy shoots
