Does anyone know if any of the major mould makers has ever made a production run .520" RB mould? I have been looking for one for three years.

Thanks,
James

Try Jeff Tanner here:

He isn't a "major" mould maker but he will make any round ball diameter you want.

barefooter,
I'll bet you have an odd ball 53 caliber rifle or one of the Western Arms Santa Fe Hawkens by Uberti that is 53 caliber
The only US regular production maker I'm aware of is RCBS

For awhile I know that Hornady made their high quality swaged version in .520 probably because of the Santa Fe Hawken then I noticed they quite.... however I just got some new production Hornady .520 swaged from Graf.... so I guess Hornady decided to make a few more.

Lyman made them, but very hard to find. Have seen 2 in four years of looking. I bought a 2 cavity from Rapine about 8 years ago. You can but swaged .520 from Hornady.

By any chance can you use a .526 RB mold. If so I have a lyman F/S, cheap.

Rebel Dave,
Yeah, it might work. I want to use a smaller ball than a .530 in my Cabin Creek .54 Cal. York County rifle. The .530s were very tight with the .018" patch I like to use and I tried the Hornaday .520s and they shot well. I also have a .54 cal. pistol that likes the smaller ball as well.

Please send me the details on the mould and I will give it some very serious consideration.

Thanks,
James

The .520 ball is actually for two flintlocks, both built here in the USA. The first is a .54 cal. Yorktown rifle from Cabin Creek Muzzleloading in PA. The second is for a pistol made for me by Sweet William a few years ago that shoots the best with a .520 ball. I am shooting Hornadys, but I always prefer to cast my own. I use a .018" pillow ticking patch and the combination is very accurate in both guns.

I checked out the RCBS mould at Midway. It is $116.00. If I have to, I will cough up the money for it if the .526 mould that Rebel Dave has doesn't work out.

Thanks,
James

barefooter,
Ya makes sense. I know that originals came in all manner of calibers including fractionals. Even some custom jobs utilizing some barrels would be in the odd calibers. That price tag has kept me from 'biting the bullet' on the RCBS but it's about the only game in town for a US production mold. I have used both the Hornady swaged for my 53 cal along with a cast supply from a friend who has the RCBS .520 mold. That mold drops a nice RB tho.
