Team.

I have been traditionally using AR2205/H4227 for all my .303 Brit cast loads. The last batch of powder I had was a tin I picked up from an alternate source and it was dated 2001. It shot GREAT. My new batch is very current and all my loads have gone out the window. Clocked it in my .223 today and it is hotter velocity wise than the old batch. My .303 loads went from 1 - 1.5 MOA to 3 MOA.

Short story is a bought some Alliant 2400, not available here from the last 20-30 years, and now I am back on track. 13.8gr under a 205gr bullet doing 1400fps and shooting sub 1.5 MOA again. AND 500 loads to the pound!

There is a lot to like about 2400.

Jeff,
What was the problem with 2400, was it not imported into NZ? Also I was wondering what the cost is in NZ.

No Alliant had been imported, prior to about a year ago, for a long time.

Paying USD48.00lb. No, that is not a mistype.

What really gives me the sh1ts is ADI powder from AU is MORE expensive. How so?

~16 gr of 2400 is one of THE great loads in almost any of the full sized late 19th and
20th century military cartridges. Of course the .303 meets this description.

Glad that you have access to it now, sorry that the price is high, but it is totally weird that
Aussy powder is MORE.

I'm sure you must have heard of Unique, another great old Alliant powder. Try about
10 gr in anything larger in powder space than a .44 mag and you'll likely be pleasantly
surprised. Excellent in .44 mag, good or better in the milsurps as mentioned above.

I go with 2400 in more rifle applications than any other powder.

I hope your supply lasts.I would cry alligator tears if i was without it.its my favorite in the 303 and 190-225g bullets @ 14-16g. You have much more experience with that caliber than i do i bet and its good to hear i picked the right powder. You didn't use any crazy tufts of Dacron to hold the powder back did you!

Jeff, the OZ government has made life hard for shooters with new rules on supply, freight and storage of powders which has put the price up. Pat

Actually yes. Now calm down and hear me out.

I shot initially the 2400 without one of my wool wads (tufts) and the groups were 2-3 inches. Today, with 13.8gr and a wool wad producing 1395fps the No4 MK II put 5 shots in 1 1/4 inches at 100m/110y. It's pretty darned hard to argue with success like that in a three oh three.

Why 13.8gr? It's one of the weights my Lee auto disc throws followed by 14.9gr. I like to use the auto disc when I can for consistency.

Jeff, sounds like you have found a great shooting and economical load with 2400. Sorry to hear how much the powder costs you there. I hesitate to pay over $20 a pound here for powder.

Jeff, I've been using 2400 for a few years now in several 45/70 riffles,, no deer has ever got up, using the "handi-riffle,, plan to shoot it in a 32 inch BC with 500 g w/w for long range deer.
There is plenty of room in the brass, so be careful,, one can over load on about anything..

And you should use a filler with 2400 I always do, now if you can get your hands on some Unique down under you can forego the filler.

Thanks for the warning on the new stuff (not sure that what I have is 'new stuff' - it seems to work OK where used - in a 303 Brit of course!) The Auzzie govt does seem a little paranoid about guns and stuff. I wonder what they're afraid of?:?:

If I had to have only one powder, it would probably be 2400!

What is wrong with Australia well for one thing the country was built on convicts lol. And maybe some of the same people sit in parliament when it first started and they think it was yesterday lol. :)

But in all seriousness I do hope things change for the good people of Australia. But then again I thought there would be a huge change when they did that huge firearm roundup.

I suspect got a lot to do with the population distribution with most Auzzie's living in big cities. That means the gun fearing paranoia of the voters has to be taken into account. And guess what? City dwellers tend to be gun fearing! Can't blame them - they don't get to grow up with a gun in their hands. And guns are scary dangerous - so are sharp kitchen knives but everone grows up with them.
