i recently bought a rifle off a friend of mine and he isnt sure what it is. through some research and talking with my gunsmith of an uncle we have concluded that it is a 7x57 mauser. but as to the year and model that is still to be decided. i have pics of the stamps and bolt and all. the bolt face is square bottomed. the barrel and upper are stamped with what looks to be a "JB" or "J3" the upper and barrel are serial matched with eachother...and the lower and floorplate are the same but upper and lower do not match

There's no crest on the receiver ring? You don't show a photo of the top of the receiver ring where a crest would be so I don't know any more than this is a 1893 Mauser. The flat bottom on the bolt face positively identifies it as a 1893 model.

The side rail address is "generic" and does not state what country it was made for. The 1893 Spanish Mauser will have something like Modelo Espana. The Chilean Mauser will have Chileno Modelo 1895.

The 1893 OVS (Orange Free State) South African Mauser will have OVS under the serial number. But there were other 1893 that went to South Africa that did not have O.V.S. There were rifles that went to Transvaal and South African Republic (ZAR). Those are the 3 primary South African principalities that bought Mausers.

DWM came into existence in about November, 1896 so this rifle was made from that point forward, possibly as late as 1901 or 1902. That's about as late as the 1893 model was manufactured. The 1895 Chilean Mauser was also produced to 1902 but the 1895 is a different model than the 1893, they aren't the same.

I take it there's no stock for this rifle? Many times the stock will have identifying markings.

DWM 93 mauser, a quality piece in it's day. Hope the bore is good. Should be
a crest on the top of the front receiver ring. Any traces?

thanks for the rapid replys.....no there is no crest on the top..and yes it has a stock but is aftermarket and not original so no help there...lol all of the stamps i could find are shown in the pics...i figured those would be the main identifying marks other than the square bolt bottom. yes the bore is in good shape..but the outside has some pitting...not too major tho. what are the significance of the stamps such as the one on bolt handle... i know the others are serial numbers ...and what about the JB or J3 next to the serial and on the bottom of rear sight and the star on the lower chamber housing?

i bought this gun from a friend that had a guy give it to him and told him if you can figure out what it is ..you can have it....i gave him $40 for it and am in the process of having a scope mounted and bolt recessed into stock and side safety installed.
i needed to know what model it is as far as parts and such are concerned.

the moron who had it (and i do mean moron) painted the metal instead of having it blued ....now i have to completely strip it and refinish it
im trying to decide on whether to have it reblued or a baked on ??? moly??? coating.
looking at about $165 for blueing and $75 for coating.... any words of wisdom on finishing preferences?? the barrel has been shortened considerably from factory from what i can tell but is plenty long enough to make a good sporter
it shoots straight as far as i can tell from running a box of ammo thru it but impact was high at 50yds with open sights but should be good with scope when it is finished.

The new gun paints are reported to be fairly durable, I've never used it. Sandblast or glass bead and then heat
to "very warm" with a heat gun and swab on T4 or Dichropan from Brownell's will do a
reasonably good job for super cheap.

As far as parts - Mauser 1893 by DWM shouild be enough to get the correct parts.
