Are you wrapping so that the patch comes forward of the bullet shoulder onto the ogive? The patch should bear againt the start of the rifling and engrave. Nother scenario - is the patch so large that it won't enter the freebore. Lossa 47-70s don't have any freebore. Bullet seated out too far? (or undersized boolit?

Patch it wet, roll it tight and if you twist it going in the case, be sure to twist the same direction patch is wrapped in.

Would you happen to have pictures you could post for us? (That in itself is a mission until one becomes familiar with the tricks!)

Is it catching on the crimp ledge in the die?

What is the bullet diameter before you patch it?

A smooth sided bullet doesn't work well for me. The patch CAN slip some. I prefer a standard grooved bullet sized down in a push-through die. The grooves give the paper something to grip and hold a bit more lube after final sizing.

it is probably tearing on the crimp ledge. Run your seating stem all the way down and adjust your die body upward to compensate. I bell my cases such that I don't have to crimp the bell down in order for it to chamber.
