ive seen many people buy aluminum blocks and mount the 450 or 4500 heaters to them.
what other options are there?

i am thinking of drilling a small hole in the base/frame and epoxying a soldering iron element in it. or would that heat the wax too hot?

I go with the KISS philosophy. I clip a reading light next to my 4500 and walk away for 20 minutes then come back and cast. It gently heats very nicely, doesn't cost me a thing.

Why put up with the hassle? Use a soft lube that does not require heat. I have
been casting since 1976, never used a hard lube, never considered there to be
any benefit to offset the nuisance.

I size in my basement and for all intents and purposes my basement is unheated. I place one of those small electric space-heaters (maybe 9" tall, 6" wide and 6" deep) about 18" from the lubrisizers, come back in under ten minutes and go to work. Keeps me warm and keeps the lube flowing.

Sizer mounted to metal plate, $2.00 tag sale iron placed on top of metal plate.
Infinite heat control.

Hair drier or heat gun from Harbor Tool. I used to use the cheapest hair drier that I could find at the local Wal-Mart. It disappeared over last summer while on an extended trip. Just bought a heat gun from Harbor tool that was on sale. On low lube was soft in about 5 min. on high lube was flowing all over the place in 5 min. This is Carnuba Red that has spent fall and winter cold soaking in the low lands of So. Cal. Hard lube doesn't make a mess in the summer in So. Cal.

i use a $2 hairdryer from goodwill in the winter when the lube flows slowly.

I agree 100%.Especially with rifle bullets soft lubes are the ticket.

Been casting, sizing, and lubing with the same old #45 since 1964. Used to use Ideal lube for years, but the Lee 50/50 Alox/Beeswax is soft enough for all my needs too. In the winter, a hairdryer set pointed at the old #45 for about 3 min. is all it takes to get things going again. Who needs that hard lube anyway?8-)
