I'm looking for an ideal mold #518144, does anyone have information on this bullet and/or availability of mold?

Well, Ideal listed it in their 1897 catalog.
Scroll way down to page 99.

Bufalo Arms has this mold, not the one your lookin for but it might work.

Good luck in your search for a mould for the Maynard.

Mine came with a 2 cavity mould, but not for what your looking for.

I`d enjoy some contact with another Maynard owner....especially because you may be located nearby. (?)

Scott

Maynard shooter

Go over to the NSSA site. those guys shoot Maynards and Smith carbines. You might find some leads to the mold there. Smith carbines shoot alot of the same bullets as a Maynard.

I'm in the Saratoga area and new at this site. I've got about fifty 400 grain bullets that a local black powder shooter molded for me with a 515141 die. They are a little heavy for my Maynard. The next best I can find is a 515139 but iwould prefer the 518144. Do you come out to the Civil War event in Saratoga?

There must be 30 different 5o cal maynard bullets being used in the N-SSA. Go to N-SSA.org. Click on Bulletin board

Rob,

No, I do not make it to Saratoga.

I will ask some fellow casters in my area and see if I can help you locate the one your looking for.

My 1st Model cased set includes a 35cal rifle and a shotgun barrel with accessories.

Regards,

Scott

My 518144 weighs 270gr from WW as I shoot smokeless only from a 50/70. it drops from the mould .519. Even with WW's it a hard mould to get complete fill. There's not a whole lot of room for much lube in the grooves, so I'm wondering if some other mould would be a better choice. The size of the grease grooves in that 515141 you shot are at least twice as big. The picture under my name to the left of this page is from my 518145HP and that is basically the 518144 with a large bottom band added, It measures .523 and weighs 333gr., and my 515139 you mentioned is 340 gr. at .517 Most all of the correct old .50 moulds were discontinued back in the early 50's. What is the bore diameter of your Maynard? The reason I ask is a number of the old .50 cal moulds like 509134 is 367gr. & 512137 is 288 gr both are .512. My Smith boolit that has one nice big lube groove measures and measures only .504 and is 303gr. These are all from WW remember, so diameter and weight will chance from your mostly lead alloy. Like Rapine moulds might be a good place to look if you can find a catalog.....Geo
