Went to the range yesterday and just shot for fun. No load testing, no practice for a match, just poking holes in paper.
I hadn't shot my old Marlin 336 in awhile so I brought it. Its actually my Dad's, but I don't think he ever shot it. Its a 1950s gun, pre micro groove, and not drilled & tapped for scope mounts. I put a Williams 5D on it years ago.
My pet plinking load of 8 gr Green Dot under a Lyman 311041 put 14 shots into one ragged hole about 1 1/4 " round at 50 yds. I pulled one about an inch away, or maybe it was a bad bullet. At 100 yds , it easily held the 8" bull I was shooting at. Groups were probably 5 inches or so. 100yds with my eyes and those sights is stretching things a bit for group shooting. For this reason only, I sometimes wish I could throw a scope on it.
What would be a good load using the same bullet with Alliant 2400? Yes I own a loading manual and could look up the range, but I mean what loads have shot well for you guys ?
