Went to the range yesterday and just shot for fun. No load testing, no practice for a match, just poking holes in paper.

I hadn't shot my old Marlin 336 in awhile so I brought it. Its actually my Dad's, but I don't think he ever shot it. Its a 1950s gun, pre micro groove, and not drilled & tapped for scope mounts. I put a Williams 5D on it years ago.

My pet plinking load of 8 gr Green Dot under a Lyman 311041 put 14 shots into one ragged hole about 1 1/4 " round at 50 yds. I pulled one about an inch away, or maybe it was a bad bullet. At 100 yds , it easily held the 8" bull I was shooting at. Groups were probably 5 inches or so. 100yds with my eyes and those sights is stretching things a bit for group shooting. For this reason only, I sometimes wish I could throw a scope on it.

What would be a good load using the same bullet with Alliant 2400? Yes I own a loading manual and could look up the range, but I mean what loads have shot well for you guys ?

Haven't done work with 2400 in the 30-30 myself but don't know why not? that bullet is a great one in the 30-30. I use 30.5 gr. H-335 for a max. load that is the most accurate load I have shot. 33 gr. Win 748 is about the same. Start a tad lower of course. this powder likes the pressure..got the load from a guy on here.

I kinda like 10.5 Unique with the RCBS RNFP w/check. Great hunting load here in S. TX. Mainly shorter ranges, 100 yds or less and this is a super stopper.

I had a 1927 M94SRC that I had to devolope a load for cuz the rifle wasn't happy with the jacketed bullets.

You bring up 2400, guess I'm gonna have to try that powder on 30wcf.

I use 8.5 gr of unique behing a Lee 150gr fpgc covered with liquid Alox
don't know the speed but it is a mild, fun, plinking load at 50 yds.
I usually shoot my not so perfect bullets using this load rather than re-melting them in the pot.
