Is it ok to use small pistol standard primers in 357 magnum loads? I have a large amount of standard small pistol primers and would like to load up a few 357 midrange loads

Myself I haven't used a Magnum SPP for years in 357, without a leak or a hiccup. Not barn burners by any means, but 357 none the less.

your mileage may vary.

Thanks a bunch. Thats what I thought! Mine are not going to be max load by any means but are going to be a bit more than my 38 target loads.

Generally, yes. Unless you're using one of the slow, hard-to-light ball powders like 296, then magnum primers are necessary.

Small standard pistol is all I've been using with Unique powder, and have never had a missfire. So far so good.

The powder you use dictates the type of primer needed, the caliber doesn't have anything to do with it. Check the loading data for the powder you intend using.

Actually ,I feel a mag primer is`nt needed until ya reach some very cold temps !

Build some loads in the winter with MSP primers H-110/296 that are OK chronograph em , then in the summer chronograph em again .

The same load as above except with SP primers. The max fps will be closer together !

But when the temp drops ya need em !

sounds good guys. I usually have either unique-hp38/231- or bullseye to choose from as most of my loads are 45acp-380-38 special-9mm mak. Thanks for the help.
