What is the differance between the 45-70 gov. and the 45-70 SS reamer. I am building a rolling block for cast bullets and they have these two reamers listed. A friend has a reamer for 45-70 but I don't know if it is for cast or jacketed. Is there a differance? Thanks for any advice or any answers in advance john

Where are you purchasing the reamer from? 45-70 SS may be the Sharps Straight reamer. I'm guessing the reamer you want is for the 45-70 Government.

Not sure yet. I wanted to find out the differances between the two reamers. Midway has them and Broenells also has them listed. What is the differance? Length of throst or what?john

The Straight Sharps will hold 75 gr of powder - I believe it will take basic brass to form the cartridge where the Gov't brass can be purchased cheaper. You may want to look at Pacific Tool or Clymer web site as they make the reamers for both Midway and Brownells. As far as cast or jacket - there is no difference in the reamers. Sometimes bore variations will be encountered and you may want to look at the Pacific line with removable pilot. Have you chambered a rifle before?

I suggest you request diagrams of both reamers, then compare all of the dimensions.

Brownell's has a tech line worked by gunsmiths so you might give them a call and see if they can enlighten you.

Thanks for the advice and detais on the different reamers. I chambered a couple of rifles in the mid 80's , but not since. I have a buddy that is going to help, he has done a few recently. He is a machinist that has a lathe and milling machine. Last year he chambered a rifle he uses for long range shooting, so I think between the two of us we can manage. thanks again for the help. john
