Can't stand it. I have some ammo loaded in 38 special cases, as I have a 1,000 or so handy anyway.

Question: Is there any difference in accuracy when using 38 cases vs 357 cases?

Out to 100 yards, does it matter then? If so are we talking tenths of an inch in group sizes or multiple-inches in group size?

Thanks guys

Did some searching, looks like 357 cases are most often more accurate. Not a big shock.

I really just got excited because UPS says it's out for delivery (to my FFL). Didn't mean to ask the same question all over again.

I suspect you will be able to develop a load that is quite accurate using those .38spl cases. No real reason why you can't. Welcome to Rossi World. The darn guns are addicting. I love my .357, great shooter, very versatile.

Take Care

I have accurate .38 spl loads in .38 spl cases and shoot a lot of them in my Rossi. IMO it's more a question of what bullet and load the gun likes. I'm sure that the mag case is a plus but not a huge factor. I have a Winchester 94 .357 that has a .4" long "Toilet bowl" throat (at the end of a .357 case!) that puts 38 spls into 2-3" clusters at 100 yds. Go figure!

Thanks guys. Shot some 358-429 in 38 cases with 3.2 gr of 700x. Wow, very sweet. Think I'll work w/the 38 cases, your feedback convinced me it could work well.

One of my neighbors had a tenant move out, leaving behind a box of about 1000 cases--mostly 38 special. My neighbor asked if I wanted them--he's not a handgun shooter. When I first tried 38 specials in my new Rossi (looks a lot like yours, Shooter except yours is prettier) the 38's would feed singly but would jam up in 3 or 4 lever cycles--boolits or j-jobs, no difference. 357's fed everything I had perfectly. In the end, I seated out my Lee 125 gr boolits to the leading edge of the lube groove before crimping with a Lee Factory Crimp die. The result was perfect functioning, and minute-of claybird fragment at 50 yd, consistently. I've got a plinker/truck gun here for sure. You can make these shoot really well with 38 specials but you may need to seat the boolits out a bit to make them feed without a jam.

Thanks. That may be why the 358-429 worked so well as it's a long bullet by design. I didn't get to try enough to declare victory. I'll try some more this weekend.

I took my Rossi 357 out for some shooting yesterday. I had some +P loads in 357 cases and 38 spcl. cases. Same load, same bullet. Neither case produced great results, but the longer 357 cases defenitely grouped better than the 38 spcl cases.

Boy that was relaxing. I can't wait to go again. Casting is fun, but shooting a Rossi 92, 357 is funner.

..............I first bought a Rossi M92 rifle in 45 Colt. A well put together piece. I immediately got rid of the safety on the bolt and machined a plug to fill the hole. Next up was to install a Marbles tang sight.

It would feed and chamber this Lee 458-340F boolit (sized to .456") which had proven very accurate in my Vaquero (sized to .452"), but the Rossi has a 32" twist and I don't believe they were compatable. It's more accurate with the common 45 Colt boolit weights.

Then about a year later I walked into a local gunshop and they had this Miroku M92 in 45 Colt, with a round 24" bbl on consignment for $350 so I bought it. This rifle has a 16" twist and immediately took to the load with the 340gr Lee like gangbusters! Both rifles were a lot of fun to shoot, and without much load work being done both were adequately accurate.

Maybe it was a year or so later, but a week after Christmas whatever the time frame was, Big 5 had a Rossi carbine in the rack on an unadvertised sale for $399. The display carbine was a 44 mag. I asked if they had one for the same price in 357 and they did. I got it. Haven't taken any photos of it yet tho'. The carbine was immediately eager to please. It seemed to want to shoot anything darn well. I haven't tried shooting loads put up in 38 Special cases merely because I don't want to have to mess with fouling in the chamber due to the shorter case.

The only thing I do not like about it (other then the safety on the bolt) is the fact that the lever lacks maybe 1/4" of lying against the bottom metal. Not that it's a major issue, but it's just not quite right, and I think it SHOULD be where it belongs :-) Beyond that it really is one of the most fun rifles to shoot tha I own. I just need to figure out how to tame the ejection of empties!

Buckshot - Beautiful rifle, that is really something special.

Last night some 200 LSWC into 38 special cases, over 3.0 grains of 700X.

They shot great, very accurate. In the next couple of weeks I'll test them and 168, 150 grain SWC in 38 cases and 357 cases to see how they all shoot.

The 358429's feed great in the 38 brass. The 200 was good, but needed some care when feeding. But then again, the action isn't even broken in yet.

"I just need to figure out how to tame the ejection of empties!"

Buckshot--That's easy, take a coil or 2 off the ejector spring in the bolt. Also you could take out the spring and go to the hardware store and get one that is less robust. It's an easy fix.
