So i just ordered a Cimmeron "evil Roy" .45 Colt. I have an RCBS 45-270-SAA mold on the way. I'm looking for a good place to start for working up some loads. I'm new to loading the .45 Colt. I just bought some new WW brass, ordered my dillon 550 conversion kit, and need some help with what powders to use, and where to start. I'm thinking 700-800 fps would be top end loads for this gun? I just want classic light loads. No hot loads.I know a 270+ grain boolit is a bit heavy for "classic" weight, but thats the mold i wanted to try try. I thought i might buy some Trail Boss and give that a try, but powders on hand are, Titegroup, Unique, Reddot, 231, 700x, Universal, and clays.Rem. and WW primers are what i have,(if it makes any difference)
Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks again fellas!

I'll make this easy for you to remember:

6.0gr Red Dot
7.0gr 231
8.0gr Unique

Any of the above will work fine for your revolver.

My 25-5 loves the 8 grns of Unique. Bump it up to 9 if you need to put more on it

Here is a link to the Hand loaders magazine article on load the RCBS 270-SAA boolit. It is a good starting point for reloading this round.

Link: http://www.riflemagazine.com/magazine/PDF/HL%20246partial.pdf

I followed there TiteGroup load of 7.5 gr and got good results in my Mitchel arms SAA.

Personally, I like the Lyman 454664 250 Grain RNFP Cowboy bullet in the .45 Colt out of SAA's. The Lee .45-255-RF is also a good round that I have used since 1974. Both bullets are accurate and have a large flat nose to impart some serious hurt on a target. My favorite load is the 8 grains of Unique in a SAA. YMMV.

TiteGroup or Unique, in that order.

And stick to the 14,000psi data from that link above.

+1. It all depends on POA vs. POI. Use TiteGroup if the gun shoots high, Unique or slower and load lighter charges if it shoots low. Titegroup is very accurate and consistent in this cartridge as SAA pressures, use just enough to get clean cases (good seal, no soot), you'll be about right on pressure at that point.

I shoot 250gr bullet with 8gr unique or herco with great results from a ruger vaquero 5.5 inch barrle. Herco is a little more accurate in my ruger. good luck

+1 on the Herco.
Meters well, takes up a lot of case space, burns clean @ SAA pressures.
I use the Little Dandy, with the #18 rotor. Meters 9 grains behind a 250-255 grain lead.

It will be interesting to see how you make out with the point of impact with the fixed sights. It should shoot high if anything, and that is a bit harder to fix. I did get the 300 grain Lee WFN to shoot in a Vaquero so you might just be fine. Those are nice guns, and you will have fun working with it, and shooting it.

8gr Unique and that RCBS 270 makes a great all purpose load. My only concern would be the fixed sights. I load both that RCBS and the Lee 255 RNFP, should be close to POA on both. Good luck and please report back.

nothin to add just that 8 GR UNIQUE is just about the very best load ive ever used in 45 colt wheelguns.......many of em at that...just a super load. go up to 9 if ya want a little hotter and i never went above a 255gr boolit always a 250 or 255 with the colt.

hey also wanted to plug another load if you want a thrill. load a 250gr boolit ahead of 38 to 40 gr 2f blackpowder goex and compress enough to seat boolit to the crimp groove. lube your boolit with nasa lube or another bp lube that works n have a ball.

Ted, you're right on with that BP load, I played with a compressed load of FFg and the 454190 seated to crimp just over the ogive and lubed with Emmert's, about as close as one can get to original loadings without the balloon cases. Lots of fun, smoke and lube everywhere!
