I'm wanting to use 45ish grains of IMR 4320.

Should I try a slower powder?

Should I try a faster powder?

I have H322, IMR 4064, IMR 4895, Ramshot TAC, IMR 4007 SSC, IMR 4350 and several powders slower than that.

Ideas guys?

In my experiance the burn rate of 4320 seems about optimum for the 35 Whelen with that bullet weight so optimum for the 358 may be ever so slightly faster.
Even so I think 4320 is a good place to start. I am sure you can easily get to 2000 fps with that boolit. I was able to get to about 2200 with the Lyman 358009 at about 280gn.
The 4064 and 4895 should be good too. The 4350 I believe will be too slow.

Looks like whoever cast those really knew what they were doing........

Nice looking boolits! Let us know the results of the 4320 loads and don't overlook 4895. I've been pleased when using 4895 in my BLR, finding 40.5 grains of Hogdon's version giving 2060 fps to a 225 grain boolit.

Well, I decided to go with 40, 41, and 42 grains of IMR4320. Will report in here when I get a chance to shoot some. :)

I have a mold that I had Mountain Molds cut for me that is a little heavier at 255gr for my 358. My best accuracy in my rifle came with IMR-4064. I have not chronographed it but i should be over 2000 fps.

High Standard I am sorry but your bullets are totally unsatisfactory to shoot.

They are just too darn Purty. :)

Ole,
I've been shooting the 358 for 20+ years & wouldn't trade it for anything on the market. Haven't shot a cast boolit in it yet but my 200gr Hornady spire points will shoot in the same hole at 100 yds with H4895. I don't have my book in front of me but I think it is 46.5 grains. I think I get around 2350fps. PLEASE check that out with the manuals. Amazing deer round--never lost a critter..should be a great hog load too.
Check out the older reloading manuals for your best stuff.

Ole,
Forgot to add that your most efficient loads, in my experience, fill the case with just enough powder to touch the base of the boolit (at least jacketed ones)---not compressed, just touching.

High Standard 40----what are the specs on that Mountain Mold (if I may ask)it looks great-- I have two .358s and might have to give boolits whirl --

Mountain Molds has an online design program on their website you can use to design your own mold and that is what I used. He cut the mold to my specs.

255 gr from wheel weight alloy
Bore Riding Tangential Ogive
.360" as cast
Front drive band .110"
Nose length .650"
Meplat is 60% of bullet diameter
Bearing length is .577"
2 lube grooves & gaschecked
total lube volume of .695 gr.

There a a lot of other dimensions on the spec sheet, too many to list. I tweaked the numbers to fit my chamber as best I could. It's a two cavity aluminum mold. Delivery was fast, it runs great and the specs on my bullets are spot on. With my load of IMR-4064 it groups right at 1.25" for 5 shots at 100 yds from my Mauser 98 and it has been very effective on the deer I've taken with it.

I already have a .41 cal mold from Dan which is why I knew ask you about the specs-- thanks for the specs --I will consider-- I have taken a lot of deer with the .358 normally 200 Remington pspcl
but have used the Sierra 225 btsp and one 9 pt with a 250 gr hornady Rn--fun but way to much bullet dead is dead
the Remington's expand well as i have recovered several of them over the years

If you like the 225 Gr size you might try the BRP 362-225Gr GC. :)

I will do that

Well my first time out with these and I got these groups @ 50 yards, shooting off the bed of my truck/standing/rifle on a rest.

Shows promise and I got the velocity I wanted. Wish I would have been able to shoot those groups without fliers but oh well, maybe next time.

Three microscopic specs of lead on the cleaning patch when I cleaned it. Not enough to hardly notice if you weren't looking for it. :)

BTW. I didn't try the HP bullets, only the RNFP's that weren't hollow pointed. I didn't have my bullet catch with me today and I want to see how these bullets perform when they hit something.

I have gotten very good accuracy with 39.0 gns H4895 pushing a 245 gn Saeco #352. 4064 showed promise as well.
