I hadn't heard that any lots of WC820 were as fast burning as HS-7.

FWIW my lot of WC820 is just a touch faster than 296. 1 grain less in .44 Mag for same velocity with same bullet and crimp.

My 820 mirrors my batch of 296 exactly in the .357.

I don't have my lot number with me now but my 820 burns right on with 2400

It's good to have a chronograph with surplus powder.

Milsurp powder is delivered in batches/Lots, great big batch of powder from production run(s) equal a LOT.

The powder is tested to meet certain standards and is then loaded into a cartridge to a set velocity range.

Once in a while a batch came in and is off spec enough that it becomes milsurp automatically.

Recently there was a fairly fast pistol powder available by the designation of M9, no big deal right? I still have some of my old batch of M9 that is comparable in burn rate to 3031. Sam Number, different burn rates. IF I remember correctly there are two batches of #105.

I mentioned WC820FAST in my post . . .

There have been at least three distinct load ratings for WC820

The old OLD stuff that was to be loaded with H110 data. I still have some and it tested to be "exactly" like 820 with comparable loads fired back to back with H110 on the same day.

Then for a short period there was a batch of WC 820 Fast was being sold. Jeff Bartlett stated that it was too fast for the intended use and to use HS-7 data for loading.

NEXT came a batch and currently is the WC820 that performs essentially the same as AA #9.

All this long winded diatribe to say . . .

KNOW WHICH LOT OF Milsurp powder YOU ARE DEALING WITH AND THE COMPARABLE

CANISTER POWDER BURN RATE.

YMMV

Oh, did I mention the two different batches of Milsurp going by the moniker of #105, no, and that is yet another variation of a theme. One a round flake powder and the other a spherical.

HI,
WELL SAID TCLOUIS.
This is also a good reason to buy as much of the 1 batch that you like as you can afford at the time as it could disappear:Fire::Fire: never to be seen again.

My lot is in the AA#9 category, and I bought 32 pounds of it. I wish I could get some of the lot that's as fast as HS7.

The jug of WC820 I bought had "10% FASTER THAN H110" on the lable so I just drop listed H110 loads by 10% and shoot 'em up. I haven't compared it to any other powder loading, just use the 110/10% ratio. I load it mostly in my .44 Magnums with 429421 and 429244, cast from ACWW. Got it from Pat's Reloading about 2 years ago (it's in my shed and it's raining so I don't have the lot number)...

Your lot, mdi, will not be the fast lot. 10 percent would have to be more like 30 percent. Your lot appears to be like AA9/2400/N110. ... felix

Yep. I have this lot:

Felix, Do you mean the "fast" WC820 is 30% faster than H110? AA9/2400/n110 seems to be a bit more versital speed too.

Fast lots of 820 are RARE, and are like a variant of HS7, AA7, BD in speed. The normal lots of 820 are like N110/2400/AA9, and the slow lots (somewhat RARE) are like H110/WW296. Check your lot in a Ruger 357 with 150-165 grainer. Use 12 grains. If very HOT, you got a RARE fast lot, and load as BD (10 grains). If barrel full of same size granules as unfired granules, then you have a slow lot. ... felix

+10 what Felix said

My "FAST" Lot of WC 820 had "UNK" for Lot Number on the label.

I assume since it was too fast to use, they never gave it a lot number.

SWAG on my part

I bought some of the 820 when GiBrass first got it. Loaded some test rounds up with 26 gr for minimum load and they froze the cyl in my Raging Bull (454).

The other 8 lb bottle was 296 speed and worked fine.

The fast stuff works fine at AA 7 levels.

I have a question about military Pull down powders. I have never used any. So that is where I'm coming from.
Wideners has 2 = WC872 + WC 867 what would they be used for? Is there some rating on the outside of the container stating the burn rate of the powder?
