Just how much can a bullet be patch? .06,.08 etc. before accuracy is gone.

Good question But that's a bit of an open ended question - are we assuming the boolit core is bore diameter?

I would have to say no, I have some 140gr RCBS 6.5 bullets that measure .267 from the mold using WW and was thinking of giving them a try in a .270 winchester?

I had thought about that also, but the consensus is that the boolit needs to be at least bore size, or a thou over.

although I have read that some have success with undersize boolits.

as to how many, or thickness of wraps? Here too the seems to be many exceptions to the "Two Wraps" rule.

As someone once said, "Every gun is a rule unto itself"

try it and see....

Well, the black powder folks (some of them anyway) patch to bore diameter using soft alloy. They are hitting gongs at 1000yds? That doesn't answer the patch thickness question though. I do know that with a moderate hardness/softness alloy, the core gets swaged to conform to the bore and rifling without the patch being cut or confetti'ed (with light loads). Undersized core patched to groove diameter would effectively be a paper sabot'ed boolit, right? Interesting concept

Bump the bullets up in a bump up die. .267 to .271 or so shouldnt take much.

Don't have a bump die, trying to keep the cost down.

303Guy: have you ever tested to see how low you can go with your pressure and still get engraving?

Try beagling the mould, should gain bout 0.003, might make it easier to get to the size you need.

303Guy: have you ever tested to see how low you can go with your pressure and still get engraving? Right the way down. But then the boolits were over bore size to start with. I don't recall quite how the under-bore sized nose sections behaved. There was a patch impression on the full circumference of the nose so even though the core was under bore the patch itself was not. It seems the patch gets impressed into the lead core.

A fired boolit from my two groove. Very low velocity.

I developed a load for a particular gun by firing into my test tube with increasing charges until the patch confetti-ed. I loaded up a batch of those and went shooting. Killed one or two turkeys with them and the gun shot pretty good groups (for horrible open 'v'-'inverted v' sights). That's the ex-target rifle with a 'cordite modified bore' i.e. tapered with large and long throat. Perfect for paper patched boolits.:Fire:

Look what I found - pics of it! Love that little rifle!

Stages of load development.

After that the patch was confetti-ed - nothing to show in a pic.
