Look at what happened to the lead:

I'm assuming the lead grabbed some stuff out of the (walnut) media?

Does anyone know what happened here?

Call me chemistry nut I guess, but i'm just curious.

Looks like a moly coating on there.

Something in your media oxidized the lead, probably primer dust embedded in it. That happens to me to a degree when I tumble live ammo together, even with clean, fresh, untreated media. Brass oxides can be black, too, so maybe it's just brass oxide dust embedded in the lead surface.

Unlike moly, I would say it would NOT be good for your bore. And a lot of people think moly itself ain't so good. :)

Lead is discolored by the abrasive media, which is harder than the lead. Lead will not polish under these circumstances, but will be left with a matte finish. If you don't believe me, try washing it down with brake cleaner & wiping it off. The color will remain the same. The bullet is normal, and could be used without incident. If you want it shiney again, wipe it with steel wool.
