Hi all,

Can anybody give me some pointers for doing this without trashing my revolver? Ive heard of guys using Dremel tools, sandpaper, Scotch-brite pads... all kinds of methods. Can anyone explain a bit clearer for me, maybe with some pics if possible?

Any input appreciated thanks!

Well…. when it's cold and dark in the Land of the Midnight Sun a guys gotta do sumthin!

Since there is no Instruction Manual for a 454 Redhawk, I figured I better get the instructions to read the Instruction Manual off the barrel. This could cause a point of confusion for some poor soul and who knows what they might do! And, since the cylinder is marked 454 Casull and 45 Colt, no need to have .45 Colt on the other side of the barrel. After all, it might cause a point of confusion as well.

Here's how it turned out...

I started with this since I didn't have any nice little files...

I lightly ran it over the lettering just until it removed it, maybe a faint hint of it left. No deeper. Then I broke out the sand paper and hand sanded it down mostly with my thumb. I think it was 320grit. I used a small leather sheath from a knife as sort of a sanding block at times. Rigid yet it conformed to the curve of the barrel. I just sanded down the high spots, etc. and blended it in. I taped over the engraving I wanted to leave. I then finished it up with steel wool. Some guys use a scotchbrite pad for the finish they want. My ended up great the way I did it.

Snyd,

Good work and good looking gun. Would love to do that with my SS NM Vaquero, if you think that is a lot of warnings you should see what the NM Vaqueros are covered with… I have to ask, where did you get a Redhawk in 454? I am guessing it is a custom job that involves a 45colt RH with a 454 cylinder from a SRH. Who did the work and how much did it cost? (if you don't mind me asking)

I did it myself. Here's a couple posts about it.

The pros draw file the markings off and then cross polish. Draw filing prevents leaving a dished out area where the writing was. I have one done by Gary Reeder that way and you can look all you want, but you can't tell it was ever there.
