Guys... My Euro-Mauser sporter is coming on well. I now have the metal set into the wood and glassed. The next step is to drill and tap the receiver for the rear sight and give it a try at the range. I did some trading and come up with a mint Redfield receiver sight. It is an old one as it is not marked with a model, but it is the early version of the 70 with target knobs. I don't want to finish shape, detail and sand the wood until I have everything tweaked.

Before I do that I have to find the darn trigger/sear assembly.. I seem to have misplaced it and have looked high and low. Anybody have a cheap military assembly I can buy..cheap. I need the whole thing, trigger, sear, spring and pins The rifle is a CZ/Brno Persian 98/29.

I need a good condom bullet accuracy load for the 8X57. I want to tweak with condom bullets to help settle the bedding down and smooth the barrel a little and form the cases. I don't want a romp em - stomp em load. Just a nice target load.

Watcha got? All help appreciated and humbly received. I have never loaded a round of 8 X 57 in my life, so this is all new.

Chargar,

I use Remington 185gr spire point core-lokt Jword bullets in my M48 Yugo Mauser. They shoot better than anything else I've tried so far. I don't have a proper boolit mold for it yet so I have been using military pulldown 198gr FMJ BTs for offhand practice and the Rem bullets for hunting and bench shooting. I'm using IMR-4320 powder and have worked the bench groups down under 1.5" at 50 yards, which I think is ok considering my eyes and iron sights. I'm now experimenting with a Lee collet die to see if I can shrink groups further.

Hope this helps.

My son's sporterized Gewehr 98 hated every light bullet I tried in it, but it shoots the 175 Sierra spitzer and the 175 Hornady RN into MOA with monotonous regularity. I load it with all the H4831 I can get in with a drop tube. I know that isn't the most efficient powder, but I had a lot of it when I was working with the rifle, and I wanted to keep pressure down on this old Soldaten. As I recall, it produces around 2600 or a little less.

Chargar; 175 Sierra Sp,46.5 grs IMR 4895(surplus) RP 9.5 primer,RP brass, not a sizzler but accurate 2431 fps- I show .75 @ 100 yds, I would have to check but IIRC .015" off the rifling worked best for me, German 98 scoped with org trigger stoned.

150 hornady spire/moly/aprox 3.1 oal/aa4064 51.8/ wlr primer.

for the record, i just looked at what sierra said for accuracy with 150's in 30'06 and adjusted from there.

took second place in a 200yd milsurplus rifle match with a yugo/preduce44.

As mentioned the 185 gr Rem may be the choice for your needs to smooth the barrel through shooting. I've found them to be good 1.5 - 2 MOA (10 shots at 100 yards) bullets. I get the best accuracy out of them in several M98s with top end loads of 4895. I use 47 gr of H4895 in W-W cases for 2550 fps out of my VZ24s and M48s. For best accuracy I like the Sierra 175 gr SO over 49 gr of H4895 which runs 2650 fps and gives sub MOA 5 shot groups out of the bedded and scoped VZ24. I also shoot lots of the Turk and Ecuadorian surplus as of late.

I've been shooting cast in the 8x57 for more years than I remember. I used to get a very nice 160 gr FB unlubed and unsized cast bullet from Liberty Bullet Company but they retired and went out of business. Over 6.5 gr Bullseye in reformed cases (from '06 military) with the flash holes drilled they ran 1134 fps with 1" groups at 50 yards from a M(* I had with a Lyman receiver sight on. That load made for a great plinking/small game load out to 200 yards. The Lyman 323470 GC and the 323471 GC bullets are excellent and have given me the best accuracy out of every M98 8x57 I've shot them in. The 323471 in particular over 28-30 gr of 4895 and a 1/2 gr Dacron filler has always proven to be my most accurate cast bullet load in any 8x57 and may be my most accurate milsurp cast load. I have the GB 6 holer but have not had a chance to try it yet. I’ve high hopes for it with 2400 powder in the 1600-1880 fps range.

Sierra 150 over 34.5gr of IMR3031 is my target load. Not a screamer by any stretch of the imagination, but quite accurate in three out of the four 98's I have tried it in. The one that didn't like it still kept 5 shots under 3" @ 100yds.
