I have a new Marlin lever in 45/70 with a box of 350 gr boolits waiting to be loaded. Whats some good lite charges without using fillers?

I like 24 gr of 2400 with a 420 gr bullet. Cant see why it wouldn't work with a 350. I do not use fillers.
Not sure if this is "lite" or not but will give around 1350 fps.

The Lyman Cast Handbook, 4th Edition, has tested loading data. Excellent reference source for 25 bucks!

With the Lee 340 or the same bullet H/P to 320 grains IMR 3031 and start at about 50 grains for 1500 fps and work up from there if necessary. I don't consider it necessary as sighted 3" high at 100 they are dead on at 150 and wil still drop them in to 200. At the 100 yard mak they are deadly on deer and would work well on bear too.

For just plinking try Trail Boss starting with 12 grains that should run about 12-1300 fps with the lighter bullet. For pure plinking pleasure try a 457 Lee 200 gr rn made for the Ruger Old Army and 7 grains of Trail boss. This hits dead on at 25 with the same sight setting as my deer load and is a good small game and plinking load.

Look at Unique. I use 15.0 gr behind my Lee hollow base that weighs 392 gr. It's probably around 1200fps, and is pleasant to shoot. It also shoots around 1.5 to 2" groups at 100yds.
Check a good manual for a good load for the 350... it's probably close to what I use. I also don't use any fillers... Unique doesn't seem to be position sensitive.

I have shot both 24 grs. of 2400 for both my Lee 340 and Lee 405 gr bullets and 15 grs of trailboss, I like the 2400 the best. At the time I am using Rem Cases and Win. LR primers.

23-24 g 4759 with 350 Ranch dog. 1250 fps. Or 10 g Unique for nice 50 yrd target load .No recoil about 1000fps.

I've been using anywhere from 4-14 grains of Rex-3 with the 405 grain Lee boolit. Accuracy is decent across the range and the noise at the lower end is minimal.

Careful though, at lower speeds these have a tendency to bounce around through the woods.

When you are concerned about not using fillers, Accurate 5744 is an excellent choice as it is designed to be used in reduced loads and the powder is non position sensitive for ignition. So, it lights well with any reasonable density percentage loading.

5744 350 HDY RN 33.8gr 1,529fps 37.5gr 1,676fps 27,700psi 2.550"LOA

This is a Jacketed bullet listing so it will have lower pressure and higher velocity with a cast bullet. The load is from the Accurate Powder site and their entire manual is available as a free to download PDF File:

I have both Lyman books. All loads in both suggest fillers even with Unique.

ddeaton;
Fillers have gone out of fashion due the rash of ringed chambers. I know of several rifles that suffered this malady.

I have had excellent results with my Marlin 1895 using the Lee 457-340-F bullet using a relatively light load of RL-7 (40.0 gives about 1650 fps which is well within pressure limits for the Trapdoor Springfield). It shoots in 1½" at 100 yards in my scoped Marlin. In the Marlin it can be loaded to velocities that will "roll your eyeballs back in your head" but I choose a load that is comfortable to use and frankly, will do all I need a 45/70 to do.

here is the lowdown for a very fun load;

re-size case full length so it will work thru your lever.

prime case with a large pistol primer.

gently sprinkle 65 grains goex of either reg 2f or 2f select or 2f cartridge into the case.

use your case swell die to compress this powder charge so that the bullet will seat at chanular. [ takes some figuring but worth the trouble]

seat bullet and crimp so the bullet does not travel in or out with recoil. you didnt say whether your bullets were bullets or boolits...being cast lead...if cast lead then you will also want to lube em with a good blackpowder lube such as bullshops nasa lube.

grit your teeth and fire this intoxicating mixture of black powder and just plain ol fun. be very carefull tho with this load as it will gently inflict an additional seductive power over your being and before you know it...you have another habit that no matter how you play it...your hooked with the cloud of smoke and sparks as well as the pleasant smell of history.

on the other hand you better not even go here!!!

I have been Using my Marlin 1895 cowboy for Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette competition with 12.5 grains of titegroup with a 350 grain cast boolit. Shoots great with no pressure and burn super clean.

How "lite" a load do you want? Sounds like a job for Unique.

Take a look at Trail Boss and 14.0 gr is a good middle of the road load.

I've used that with both 300 & 350 gr cast bullets and have gotten good results. It's a comfotable, easy shooting load.
