I just finished testing some different boolits in wet newsprint for next falls elk hunt.

.358 Winchester 225 grain Mountain Mold boolit bhn-14:
Velocity-2060 fps; Penetration- 21.5"; Recovered diameter-.59" X.514"; Recovered weight-180.4 grs.[Lost gas check @ 16.75"]

.45/70; 457193 BHN 12.5:
Velocity-1455 fps; Penetration-19.25"; Recovered diameter-.875 X.810"; Recovered weight-422.4 grs.

.30-30; RCBS 30-180-FN bhn 12.5:[not really intended for elk]
Velocity-1786 fps; Penetration- 17"; Recovered diameter-.687 X.458"; Recovered weight-157.4 grs.

.45/70; 302 grain paper patch bhn 9.25:
Velocity-1845 fps; Penetration- 16.25"; Recovered diameter- .855"; Recovered weight-299 grs.

.45/70; RCBS 45-300 FN bhn 11.5:
Velocity- 1850 fps; Penetration- 16"; Recovered diameter-1" X .925"; Recovered weight- 329.3 grs.

The 2 lightweight .45's slightly exceeded the penetration of the 510 grain paper patched lead boolit and mushroomed to about the same size, with much less recoil.
The .30-30, I just threw in for discussion not planning on hunting elk with it.
A favorite of mine, the .358, exceeded my expectations and I may try to harvest an elk with it. I know waksupi did well with it last year, but he was using a heavier than 226 grain boolit. I know it does the deed with a Speer 250 grain at 2350 fps :-).-JDL
