I have a few thousand copper jackets in 44, 38 and 30 cal that I would like to sell but don't have any idea of value. Here is a rough list of what I have.

2700 Speer 44 cal 3/4 length
250 unopened box Herters 44
500 CH 38/9mm .483 length
500 Speer 45 half jacket
500 Hornady 30 cal cups
700 Speer 38 cal 3/4 length

Any information would be appreciated.

Great question, and I can't answer it, but I can tell you I'm interested in buying them! (Depending on price, of course.)

I've actually been looking at getting some of those made, if I could get them at a reasonable price. Some samples of originals would be a great start, and at those quantities, they may last me long enough I don't need to look for a new supply for quite awhile!

Put prices on them and list them on the buy and sell section. I and a few dozen others will jump on them. Be ready for many PM's!

I think Larry Blckmon sells his for about $70 - $80 per 1000 plus shipping. I would be interested in any or all of the 38 cal jackets if the prices are less than that.

MakeMineA10mm:

Bet he never reads your thank you..... Joined in Feb, 2011, couldn't sell on the Swappin and Sellin Board because he didn't qualify (time limit) and gets on the swaging fourm and sells them in two days... HMMMMM. Think he'll be back?

Color me a little sceptical....

Soooo skeptical!! [smilie=l:

He's on-line right now according to the little green ball under his name... I'm betting he's mostly a lurker who reads a lot but posts little. He's kept in touch well with private messages. Sent me the tracking number for the shipment. I'm betting I get the box today or Monday.

Jackets arrived yesterday. These are OLD! They are super-cool, especially to think that swaging was that popular years ago. I haven't been able to go through them very thoroughly, but there are numerous unopened boxes and a few opened ones with some missing. There is a small (tiny, actually) box with very corroded jackets (I think 30-cals or 38-cals), that are going to get the citric acid bath treatment.

Some of the jackets are very short. The one box of 30-cal are labelled on the box "cups", and I'd say they are more like super-long Gas-checks. On a 30-cal bullet they'll leave a LOT of lead exposed. I might reverse them, put a short core in them, and see if I can make a lightweight FMJ-RN for my dad's Broomhandle Mausers...

the short 30 cal jackets could be for a 30 carbine bullet

I'm glad you are happy with the jackets. I don't need another hobby and figured someone else could make good use of them. Have fun and thanks.....Neil

I don't think so. I'll have to put calipers to them, but they look about 1/3 to 1/2 the length of a 30 carbine bullet. I think they were originally intended to make a copy of the 100 gr Speer "plinker" bullet (looks like a tiny 30-cal half-jacket with a RN lead core at the front). They may even be too short for an 86gr FMJ-RN, but we'll see. (Maybe by combining this cup with a 30-cal GC on the nose, I'll get close to or achieve a FMJ bullet?) A lot of the fun with swaging is finding the right application for the materials at hand.
