We all have our different ways to be safe while we cast

I just got reminded today that your shoe's are a part to think of

I was helping 2 fishing freinds convert range lead into egg sinkers and jigs

This AM we smelted down 5 5 gallon buckets of range lead into 5 - 6 lb ingots
As I am the only one that has any casting equipment and molds

This afternoon I helped them cast the sinkers and jigs

All was going well , with big piles of the different sized egg sinkers and we had made a good start casting jig heads

When one of them knocked a 5 lb ingot off the bench onto my foot
As he went to put it in the pre heat pot

Lucky for him
I always wear steel toe boots that also have a instep gaurd while I cast
Scared me a little , but no pain
As the ingot had landed right on the toe

If it would have landed on either one of their feet ......Not good [smilie=1:[smilie=1:
As they both insisted on wearing tennis shoes

Not saying to run out and buy high $$ safty boots

But if you find a pair at the thrift store or on a yard sale for a few $
It would be a cheap way to increase your casting safty

John

And yes I kept the extra ingots
To be recycled again at a later time into range lead ingots
After we clean the boolit trap again

I ALWAYS wear work boots while casting, smelting, welding, or anything else involving hot metal! Once upon a time, I was burning rusted nuts off a old truck chassis and dripped a big glob of slag on my foot...while wearing a pair of old GI jungle boots!!

I gotta start doing that. I have steel toed boots that I have to have for work. I hate to say it but I use slip on moccasins around the house and a lot of the time when casting. I gotta quit doing that. Thanks for the tip.

I wear steel toe boots, also important that your pants completely go down past the tops of the boots . . .

I will cast in tennis shoes but never smelt. And long pants are a must. I find smelting to be a bit more hazardous just because of the increased amount of skimming, the gas flame, more flaunt and storing, etc that are needed. Not to mention the ladle and pouring ingots. Ingots that take a long time to cool!
