I checked my copy of Donnelly's Handloaders Manual of Cartridge conversions and there are two .40-50's listed. The .40-50 Sharps Necked which can be made from 45-70 casings and the .40-50 Sharps Straight which can be made from .303 British casings. Both list a bullet diameter of .403. I do not have any further info available. Sounds like a neat rifle.

Have Fun,

Pictures would help to determine whether it was a converted military action, or #1 vs 1-1/2 sporting rifle.

Looking into the chamber it should be obvious as to whether it was the smaller straight case or the bottleneck. Both were loaded with blackpowder, and relatively light bullets (260gr?).

Remington did chamber rifles for sharps cartridges do you know if it is an original or a rebuild? The difference could be substantial as to collectors value. A friend of my has a Shiloh Sharps in 40-50 SBN and it is a fun rifle to shoot. Wonderfully accurate and easy on both lead and powder plus low to non-existent recoil. His is setup for Shutzen matches. It also has more than enough power for 200 yard silhouette matches but may be a little light for full range matches.

I think the 40-50 would be a dynamite little deer rifle. You could go BP or smokeless with out the case capacity being an issue. But then I'm partial to 40 anythings.
