i got no answers for you...but some info.
the rifle appears to be a 98 conversion to 7.62
there are some like that, probably most, i do not know numbers.
i have a fn built new for israel.....israeli crest on recvr.
but mine was in crappy condition when i got it.
the conversions have the 7.92(8mm) recvers turned /ground down and remarked.

just took first place in a 200yd match with it with j bullets...

Looks like mine, mine is an Oberndorf made in 1942. It was completely refurbished when I got it and had not been fierd since the conversion. I gave it to a mate who was down on his luck along with dies, brass, etc so he could compete with us in military shooting. Five minutes after he got it, he decided he was going to make a target rifle out of it because it shot so well (doh'). He lopped the forend off and filed the charger guide down and D/T the action for a scope. Naturally, it wasn't up to target work and he sold it a few weeks later to my mate, who is in the pic. He screwed the forend on hastily and fitted an old 4xPecar and shot sniper class with it and shot a personal best. I ended up buying it for the second time and it ain't going anywhere now.

I have a Mauser 98 7.62 conversion too though not in nearly as good a shape as yours but it has a nice bore and shoots well.

It likes a Lyman 31141 (170 gr. flatpoint) as cast at 0.311" on top of 18 to 22 grains of IMR 4227. Shoots nice.

Looks a lot newer than mine, a 1916 Amberg with Imperial German, Polish (?!!), and Third Reich Wehrmacht proofs, as well as the big, ugly "7.62." Wish this one could talk!

I had one that had been sporterized. Had both Isreali and 3 Reich proofs on receiver. Got stupid and let that one go.....

Yes Pete,

They are good shooters:

This is a couple years ago before I discovered cast boolits. Mine is built on a 1940 147 receiver with a replacement Israeli barrel and beechwood stock.

About ten years ago I taught computer science courses for a couple of semesters in Be'er Sheva, and had a conversation about the rifles with a woman from Texas who had made Aliyah and is now an Israeli. She served in the Army and in the Reserves, about 1970, and was issued one - she called it a "Cheki". She is about 5 feet and 95 pounds - the recoil was a bit much for her, she said.
Soldiers carry their rifles and two magazines everywhere, but they are now autos. Saw a bus load of female soldiers obviously on their way to vacation - all in civilian clothes, stopped for a meal at Mitzpeh Ramon - every one of them had a M16 or Uzi, and they kept them handy.
