The micro groove SS gets the "J"evolutions and does 1 1/2" @ 100 all day. Just picked up straight 1895 with 93 pre-fix, I think that would be 2007? It appears to have what I have heard called shallow groove. Anyone care to share their best Boolit Rx for this tube. Long time listener, first time caller. I have been smelting/melting/tinning up/dropping for two years now, Schuetzen disease and everything. Low seat time but I'll act like I know what I am doing. Still learnig every day, I would like to thank all for the great source of information.

I use a 460420 lee group buy bullet. It is a plain base, goes around 420 grains. It thrives on 24 g of 2400. Shoots groups, when I decide to shoot groups, around 2 inches for 5 at 100 yards. It is going around 1350 fps. Recoil is light, no problem shooting 50 plus in a day. I size to .460 and use carnuba red. Lube is not as critical as size diameter. Think fat, like .460 or so.

These guns shoot cast very well. It will do anything from mild to wild. It will be easy for you to get good loads for.

+1 for mold from Bruce. I have his 462-465GC, Finally shot some of his this past week.....they work great.
But I was using H322. Superb quality. Plan ordering another mold in couple of months.
Give him a try, as it has been said.......you wont regret it.

I think this is the 420gr bullet Bruce is cutting. This one is from a group buy mould made by Lee in a six cavity. For the Marlin you want a mould that cast big enough to size at .460". size dies are a custom item. I lapped out a Lyman .459" die. Turned out to be a really hard die and took me half an afternoon instead of forty passes as usual.

This bullet also works well in the 458 SOCOM according to a fellow up in Alaska I sent some to.

Yep, my GB Lee looks just like that except mine in plain based. That is one awesome bullet in the Marlin. Get one from Bruce. Quality will be all you can ask for and it will be something your rifle will thank you for. Listen to Gabby, you want it to go .460 or a bit over. The Marlins seem to do well with .460 sizing.

Depending on what weight bullet you want I've had good luck with the following !

Lyman 330 grain "Gould" HP Plain Base

Ranch Dog 460-350GC

Ranch Dog 460-425GC

BRP 462-465GC

Ballisti Cast 462-550GC

All of these have done well in my old 1972 vintage Marlin 1895 .

Thank You kind Gentlemen. I think I am going to need one each - PB/GC.
The other .458 holes in the house like to go for truck rides.
Great site, Great guy's. Thanks-

Gtek since the prefix on your rifle is "93" it IS of 2007 manufacture and that would have Ballard Rifling and NOT micro-groove. Slug your barrel and no matter what bullet you choose to shoot size it .001" to .002" larger than the bore size measured.

Very good results with RCBS 45 - 405 GC design at about 1750 fps over W748 powder.

Best thing to do first is slug your barrel as dimensions seem to vary quite a bit in Marlins. Mine is an early microgroove, slugs 0.4583 / 0.4545, and works fine with most designs casting 0.459 or larger. In fact some of the most accurate loads have been with a mould that only casts 0.4585. There are many 45 cal moulds out there, just make sure crimp location is right for functioning in your levergun. One mould that works very well is RCBS 405 FN GC. This one and Lyman 457122HP would make a nice pair of moulds to start you off.

FWIW I like using R-7 for higher velocity loadings as found it accurate over a wide range of velocities.

Great groups Gunny, it is always that one. I know you called that flyer. Thanks a lot the information and making me want to buy yet another mold. How long after diagnosis of this casting disease does it slide into remission? Gtek

It is annotated on the target - powder is 3031 with a dacron filler.

I didn't call that flier - must not have been holding my mouth just righ. I was useing a 1 3/4 - 5 scope. I don't have any 3X9's that I want to blow up on it! :)

Didn't like the stringing is why I went up .5 grains for the one on the left.
