I have an opportunity to obtain 3 older Lyman/Ideal moulds...a single cavity version 450225, a single-cav 452460 and a double-cav of the same number. The story as told to me is they're part of an estate belonging to a fellow that recently has gone home to be with the Lord who had an obsession with muzzleloaders and 45 autos...the estate is being sold off and the proceeds donated to his favorite charity.

Allegedly, I have first pick of them before they go to auction. I've had a chance to look at them and was pleased to find that they appeared fairly old but very well cared for. Still stored in their original Lyman/Ideal branded boxes, there was plenty of a grease-like rust preventative and nary a sign of oxidation.

Right now, my gun/casting fund is pretty strapped but as I've read, these are both stellar performers. What would be a reasonable offer on these 3 moulds? The estate manager says he briefly looked them up and thought they were worth ~$65 a piece. My gut tells me he'd let them go for a lot less than that because he shipped them to me for free just so I could look at them and see if they were something I was even interested in.

Do they have handles with them? $65 each seems a bit high for them without handles. You can still get a new 452460 for under $60. With out handles, I'd say more like $30 for the singles and $45 for the double. $15-20 for each set of handles.

Nope, no handles, just the block halves, sprue plate, and handle-mounting screws.

I'm with Mr. Call, $30 for a single and $45 for a double is plenty.

Recently, I sold a Lyman 2-cavity for $40 shipped, and paid $25 for a Lyman single cavity shipped.

Don't go by ebay prices, most buyers seem to have more money than brains.

462's prices are reasonable.

$30 and $45 are pretty reasonable, assuming good or better condition. $65 is NONSENSE.

450225 is the bullet for 44cal cap-n-ball revolvers, correct?

I HAVE the 450229 hollow base slug for the same, but wouldn't pay $65 for any of the molds that you mentioned even if they were NEW IN BOX. $100 or a little more for all three would be fair.

As intriguing as it might be to put a 170gr boolit down range from my XD, the profile of the 450225 didn't look right for a 45auto-designed mould. Having read a bit more, I'm inclined to agree with you excess...cap-n-ball purposed.

With all the praise as I've read regarding the 452460 in the last 48 hours, I'm gonna throw some figures at him and see what we can haggle out.

Really hopeful that the gentle shoulder of the 460 will function reliably in my XD45...

The 460 used to be the second best action bullet for the ACP, It was the first swc I had for it, and was a good accurate bullet for bullseye. It always fed good for me in a 1911.

Yes, the 452460 is a real performer.

Ended up getting the single cav 452460 for $20 and the double cav for $25. Can't wait to get them going and see what they can do...never used a mould that wasn't aluminum.

I had a pair of double cavity 452460s that I used to keep my IPSC .45 fed. If yours cast as well as mine you're in for a treat.
