Imagine a .410 smoothie.

Imagine a 210gr .410 Keith type SWC, or say, a 240gr SWC.

Put said boolit into a .444 case with an appropriate low-pressure powder and light crimp.

Got potential? :???:

What if the 240 were hollowbased like a Minnie (bringing it down to the 200 range)

I really hate those sub 150gr (hell, sub 100gr) .410 slugs...

It mostly depends on how tight the choke is.
I'm working on a Rossi SS, .45Colt/.410.
The .444 cases were my first choice too. But there's still a huge jump to the bore/lands. Just sent for some .410 Brass. There are other ,longer cases out there but their not handy to get. If I have any success w/these I'll post same.
Pepe Ray P.S. With this mod. the choke is removed before fireing slugs.

No choke. Win 9410. Trying to see if there is any practical way to get the terminal energy up to at least the .357 rather than sub 38-40.

But maybe I'm missing somthing.

The .444 case is 2.105" nominal with 2.55" being the max OAL (in a .444)

Now, a 9410 takes a max 2.5" .410.

Why couldn't a pure-lead light loaded .444 using .410 bullets (like a .41Mag SWC) work? Would a bullet like that be impossible to stabilize without rifling? What if it used somthing like LEE's keyed system?

Have you seen this? First Kill with 11.4x74R Wildcat Contender
MikeP Oviously, I don't know how to make that a link, but it's under the Wheelguns, Pistols and Handcannon heading. That's a European brass that fits a Contender .410 chamber.

OIS.
The Forster slugs, being hollow based, stabilize pretty well. In a smooth bore I'd look for a hollow based bullet.
I've read of other slug configurations that stabilize but, your getting into spending ,to me, lots of money for custom molds etc.
Also , don't forget, the shotgun chamber msmnts. must include space for the crimp to unfold. Pepe Ray

That's another reason I'm leaning to an exposed bulled .410/.444 loading. Plenty of room to uncrimp.

Ironsights:

Lyman actually made at one time (cataloged 1963 - 74) a .410 Foster slug mould, but I've never run across one. Like the 12-16-20 ga. ones, it would be a deep hollow base, without the outside spiral grooves. (They made a push-through die to cut these, but experiments show that the Foster slugs shoot just as well - or badly!- without the grooves.)

I know a guy that loads a 40 cal 200 gr HP XTP in a 2 1/2" hull and kills a lot of deer.

He shoots in out of a Stoeger OU.

His load is 18 gr of H110, with the BPI wad that they sell that comes with a Round ball for .410's , can't remember the name., I asked him what hull he used and he said any that is rated for a 1/2 oz load. His words.

I seen him put 6 shots on a 4 in aiming dot at a 100 yrds with just the bead for a sight.

good luck

I've got a 220 grain .410 HBWC mould, Lyman 41027. Sent a batch to a fellow working on a similar project. He reported that they made pretty fair .410 slugs after he drilled out the hollow a bit more.

Thanks Slowpoke.

Leftover: I wonder if the 41027 can be re-pinned for a deeper HB?

I saw one of the .410 Lyman molds on eBay this past spring. Someone had one each of 12, 16, and .410 molds and was selling them all in separate auctions. I tried to get the .410, but it just went too high. IIRC, it went for around $250, the 16 for upwards of $100.

Anyone ever thought of doing a group buy on a .410 mold? I'm sure someone here has the specs on the Lyman mold or we could get them on a factory slug. Sure would be a lot cheaper than buying a used one . . .

A friend I hunted with in MN wanted to rebarrel a 410 SMLE enfield to a rifled 410 and use brass 410 labelled shells loaded to 41 magnum power. Then they OKd pistols and he gave up on the idea

Old, yeah, it's easy to make another pin.

I was looking at this pic of the 41027: http://www.three-peaks.net/images/410027-41027_217g.gif

I doesn't appear to be a nose pour/hollow base. Is yours custom?

Looks like it would be a nice mold to find, though I wonder if a 75%-80% meplat tangent wouldn't get slightly better range than a full WC.
