:coffee: ----Stopped into our local gun shop to buy some primers and powder---sat for a while throwing the bull when the gun dealer asked if I had seen the S&W .460--I said no well he proceeded to pull out a massive gun that was ported and said you want power here it is then he showed me a cartridge -----big --looks like a small mortar shell----gun also shoots .454 causal and 45 long colt. To much gun for me but an ass kicker for sure---For those shooters that want power take a look at this monster--------Mag

It is definitely a big cartridge. Right at 2 and a 1/4 inches. I shot it in the bfr and it didn't kick as bad as I thought it would. I want to see about putting a 500 grain boolit in there and bringing that velocity down a bit.

I've shot 1 round through a S&W 460. The gun was outfitted with a Burris scope & was equiped with a bipod. The recoil wsn't as bad as I thought it would be, but the muzzle blast was simply awful!

I'd love to get my hands on a 12 or 14 inch barrel in an Encore. From what I have read the single shot will get about another 300 fps over the revolver. Now if I only had more money than I had dreams.

that's what I've always heard, but I just have to wonder. Seeing as how that's about what people are picking up in a 22 inch nef single shot in dealing with the 500. I just don't understand how an extra 4 inches will give you 300 fps. Yes I know about the cylinder gap, etc. Not saying it can't be done, I would just have to see it to believe it.

I have heard the problem is that they get the velocity at the expense of bullet weight. Factory loads use very light bullets for the caliber. You can make the gun sit up and talk but will lose trajectory which is what S&W was shooting for.

what is a light weight boolit in 45?? Most jacketed fodder is 200 gr ( looking at midway ). the 460 uses a 200 grainer at 2400 fps... seems like enuff muscle to get the job done on Whitetails or Muleys

Talking to the LBT people about the .454 and .45 Colt, they say the 335 gr is the starting point for the .454 and the end point in the Colt. I would expect to shoot at least 335 gr's in the .460.
I would not use some of the light jacketed bullets in one because they can be too fragile. My friend sent me a picture of a deer he shot at 140 yd's with his .460---it was DESTROYED! I never seen such a mess, the whole front end was lost.
It would be served very well with a 200 gr hard cast, flat nose boolit though. I still like a heavy boolit because I think it does more internal damage without making mush out of the meat.
Ranger Rick, I do have a question as to why you chose such a high scope mount?

My S&W XVR Hunter 460 14" version is mounted with a 9"-12" Versa pod and Leupold Mark 4 Picatinny-Style Rings , 4x28 MM Leupold scope ( for now anyway ).
I went with the high rigns for a couple reasons .
I am kinda tall with long ape arms and while in the prone position with the 12" bipod I can shoot a little better due to I am more comfortable with the scope being a tad higher .
I could of been ok with shorter rings but I am glad I got these .
The scope that is on it now is just temporay untill I get another one .
I am looking at the Leupold 2.5-8 VXIII 32MM so I wanted to make sure I had pleanty of room for the scope.
I am also working on long range target shooting 300 plus yards ??
I am getting it pretty well dialed in at 165 yards with this 300 Grain bullet . This is about all I can do with the scope on it now .
I am working on a couple more bullet designs and weights .
I will be using this revolver for my upcoming Goat hunt in 2007 , if I get drawn for a permit .
I will aslo use it on 2007 Caribou hunt .
I almost do not use my rifles anymore . I have not used them for the last two years .
This Revolver is just plain fun to shoot .

I feel the same way, no more rifle hunting for me and I quit using them a long time ago. I only hunted 3 hours all this season, shot twice, once with each of my BFR's and killed two deer. It is easy since I don't hunt bucks for two reasons. There are no trophy deer here and I can't stand the meat. Yes, I have killed a pile of bucks through the years but only tried to eat a few and just gave the meat away from all the others. YUCK! Like eating old billy goat.
