There's a 4" 627 that looks like it wants a permenant home. I've no experience with a 627 but a loooong history with S&W products. I've generally been pleased but most of my S&W collection is pre-1990. Can anyone comment on this new-ish 8-shot .357?

Many thanks!

BLT -

Would love to own/shoot a 7 or more shot "N"- frame .357Mag.

My experience runs to S & Ws, especially "N" frames of 4", 5"; and 6" bbls.

My carry gun of many years has been: a 4" custom heavy-barreled M-520 ( square butt )
by redoubtable NE Indiana pistol 'smith Dave Schwarze. Fixed-sights, pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, bobbed hammer, smooth combat trigger inside a narrowed trigger guard ( 'ala Bill Jordan practice ). Custom " Jordan Trooper" grips from Herrett's.

Gun weighs same as a 5" M-27, and balance feels the same.

If you DO buy/shoot that "N" frame, please give 14.5gr WW296 and SP Mag primer under
a Lyman SWC of 158-172gr a try.

With regards,
.357Mag

One of my long-time favorits loads in 357 Magnum, using Lyman #358156. This is right at the top of current SAAMI specs for the caliber, ~37K PSI. It won't beat up an older K-frame very much at all, and the L- and N-frames can digest them all day long. GREAT LOAD, and it closely duplicates my agency's service load for practice purposes. (So does 13.5 x 2400, use a standard primer).

I loves me a 357 Magnum!

Mine took awhile to break in. Just like about everything else. I don't like the angled rifling for cast in the standard offerings and would go to a custom shop model with the broached barrel if I did it again.

The only reservation I have with N frames in .357 mag is the short cylinder, which pretty much places limits on the use of long, heavy high performance cast bullets. The N frame is the same basic design that S&W was used since the '30s, but with modern metallurgy. There are plenty of good bullets available in it's comfort zone, especially the afore mentioned 358156, which I believe was designed with the N frame in mind.
