My first attempt at developing a cast bullet hunting rifle is coming along nicely. I have previously used CBs to take big game with MLs and revolver, but this is my first try with a high powered rifle. I worked up an accurate load over the summer and just connected Saturday with a pair of critters. The boar hog and whitetail doe were taken a couple hours apart in nearly identical shots. Both were about 25 yards away broad side. The bullet went through both shoulders and exited. Both animals traveled 15 yards and piled up. The autopsy revealed good lung destruction. Load data is as follows:

Rem M788 .308
Lyman 311291 (170 gn GC ) sized to .311
75/25 ww/Lino HT
Lube: Felix
31 gns IMR 3031
MV estimated @ 2000 fps

Nothing like a good day hunting. Congrats on the double. That hog will be real good cooked over some apple or cherry wood.

Good double! I hunt with the twin of your rifle, the same powder & charge, with the Lee 180gr RN boolit, (only because I haven't had a chance to start working up the 170FN yet). I get 1.5" groups with this boolit. Mine has a recoil pad, a Williams peep sight, and a floated barrel. It will keep 5 Sierra 150 or 165 SBT's in 1/2" at 100yds if I let the barrel cool. I think they're the best rifle Remington has ever made. I also have one in .22-250, and would like to get them in .223 & .243.

There's a special thrill to bringing meat home with cast loads of your own making. Were you able to recover any bullets ...?? Curious to know how those hard ones did. :drinks:

No, I didn't recover either bullet. Both bullets blew through both shoulders and kept going. Although on the hog's exit shoulder, I did find one tiny lead fragment.

Yes, taking game with cast bullets has much more meaning. J-bullets just weren't doing it for me anymore.

I too am very pleased with the inherent accuracy of this old Rem "economy" rifle. I bought this one brand new in the late 70s when I was a teen. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Nice going, two in one day.
Should make for some real good eating.
