I had a small collection of odd cartridges. On was about the size of a 50-70 but was a rimfire. Does any one know anything about it?

Does it have a copper case? It may be from a Spencer Carbine.

The Swedes or maybe it was the Danes had a .50 rimfire round for their Remington Rolling block rifle that was very similar to our .50-70.

It's very possible it was a 50/70. The early ones were inside primed, meaning you hit the primer with the firing pin as we do today in the center, but the primer was hidden underneath the copper. Does it look like these?

George It looks most like the one to the left. It doesn't have any crimps near the bottom.
Cwskimisher, yes a copper or brass case.
Thanks for the info.
It's up at my brother in laws right now. I plan on visiting in the next week or so. I'll see if the collection is still there.

Good orning
There are also variations of a Rolling Block Pistol cartrige called a 50-45 or 50 rem. Short little stubby thing with a case about .90 inches. Bad news up close.

I should have given a whole page url instead of just the one picture. There's some very interesting pictures in that album of a lot of arsenal testing and manufacturing I scanned from Pitman Notes and other old books. Look at the bottom of page 3 for .50 Remington pistol cartridges and the .50-45. http://www.sodcity.com/gallery2/view_album.php?set_albumName=Cartridge-Springfield-pictures-etc&page=3 ...Geo

Norway had the rimfire that was almost identicle to the .50-70, I have one of their conversions with a two leaf express sight.
They cut off the front of the block, welded [silver soldered??] a new face onto it, and drilled for a center fire firing pin. Nice job, minty bore, should shoot nice!

Norway/Sweden never converted their rimfires to centerfire for military use.
The Swedes went for a 8x58RD conversion of the RB's and the m96 Mauser.
The Norwegans went for the Jarmann in 10.15x61R bolt action magasine fed and continued to the Krag Jørgensen in 6.5x55.
