Good morning
I am starting to gather the parts to put a 38-40 Model 1873 barrel / receiver into usable state.
I have a 32-20 1873 that has a shot out barrel that I will use for the bulk of the parts. As I understand I need a 38-44 bolt, carrrier, front stock and mag tube.
Is there antthing else ? Have any of these laying about you do not need ?
Thanks ! Mike in Peru

Mike, isn't the 38-40 mag tube a larger diameter than the 32-20 mag tube? If so, will it fit into the mag tube hole in the front of the 32-20 receiver? I know this is the case for the 1892 receivers.

Greetings KirkD
My 38-40 barrel is mounted on a 38 / 44 receiver so that will not be a problem.
Thanks for the heads up...

Ah yes. I see in your original post you are using a 38-40 receiver. Then you will be fine.

Mike, Why couldn't you use a 44-40 bolt and other parts as the the 38-40 is nothing more than a 40 cal bullet loaded into the 44-40 case. In fact you can use the same cases by loading and fireforming. I know you have a 44-40 if I'm not mistaken with my memory.

Good morning Cajun..
Correct on the same basic size of the parts on 44 & 38 WCF. Just do not want to take apart the 44-40. The 32-20 barrel is almost a smooth bore with a .316 throat and needs relined. Have had the 38-40 barrel / receiver awhile and decided next time up it gets put to work on groundhogs and coyotees.
Thanks on the info on Pioneer Gun Works down in the WTB Forum.

i have one in 38-40 one thing you might want to check is a new ejector. not extractor. the ejector. you might have to tune it to the legth of the 38-40 case with the bullet in the case. if i remember right the 32-20 is a lot shorter and if ejector is not shorted you will not be able to to clear the gun if needed.

Taking a look at my little cartridge display here, the 32-20, 38-40 and 44-40 are all the same length ..... at least for the ones I have in my display.
