Where do you get the sizer dies for .302 , .304 etc for paper patching sizing a 30cal bullet before patching back up to .312 to .316 etc

Why would you do that?
I never got it to work. I size to .308, then wrap, then size to the size I need.

If I may ask, what caliber are you going to patch for? And what gun? What alloy/hardness would you be using?

I make mine from 7/8 u-bolt stock. It is pre-threaded and made from 4140 so it hardens well.

Will be PP for the 30-30 win., 308 win. and the 303 british as well as the 45/70
Alloy would be WW
30-30 is a Win 94 and a Marlin 336, 308 is a Parker Hale Bolt, 303 is a NO1 MK3 and the 45/70 is a marlin 1895GG

First things first. Slug your bore. I size .001/.0015 over bore, not groove diameter.

pdawg shooter: I am confused. I thought groove diameter and "bore" were the same. I want my bullet to be .001 to .0015 over the largest diameter of the barrel. Am I mistaken?
Sorry for the confusion..........

Catch, if I'm not mistaken, the "bore" is the first drilling of the barrel. Then the grooves are cut, making a set of rifling.

Since the grooves are the second cut, they are deeper.

In other words, the bore diameter is smaller than the groove diameter of the barrel.

I'm just getting into this too. I think one wants the nose of the bullet to ride the "bore" and the patch to be sized .001 over "groove diameter" for best performance.

That is what I'm gathering from all the reading I've been doing.

Hope this helps.

jollynator is right on.

The throat size and shape might be the dominating factor for paper patching meaning that ideally the patched boolit should snugly fit the throat when the cartridge is loaded. Probably less significant if the throat is not excessively oversize - I have not put that to the test so I don't know.

OK guys, I think "Catch" is finally catching on here. What is the best way to measure the throat? Am I also correct in assuming that some throats are longer than others and may be tapered to some extent? Should the throat be the same size as groove size? Then is this where all the trouble starts, when the throat gets burnt out larger than groove size? I am full of questions, but the more I learn, the more I want to know (it seems). Thanks guys for your help and patience...........

Catch, I have always thought the more I learn the less I know. every time I learn something new, it opens up areas of ignorance I diden't even know I had.

Ask away Catch. Maybe we can keep you from making all the same mistakes we have. I for sure have made about every one that could be made in the last 40 years of playing with paper.
