Been thinking of buying a encore rifle frame and stock and was wondering if anyone has one that they shoot black powder in a 45/70 or 50/70. I have a roller and two trapdoors and love shooting them but as my old eyes keep getting worse I was thinking of getting a 50/70 barrel in an encore and scoping it and seeing how well it shoots. Just wondering if anyone else has done so and any tips on barrel sources or such would be helpful.

I've got a 50-70 Encore barrel currently in stock.

Unfortunately, I haven't shot any BP out of the 50-70 barrels I've had or have, yet.

Why not just put a Malcom scope on one of your BPCRs, it would be period correct and about the same money as going with an all new gun.

I bored a chamber between 12.7x44r and 50-70 in an old 50 cal muzzleloader barrel and screwed it onto a Lee Enfield action ( I make it sound pretty crude don't I ). so I thought if I see an inline for a good price I may make another.

I could put a Malcom scope on the Roller, and may do that. I don't think I can mount one on a Trapdoor though. Ive had a Contender for years and like the interchangeability of it and thats why I was thinking of an Encore....but at this stage just thinking. The roller has a 45/70 Numrich barrel and would work fine with a scope I think. I guess with the Encore the recoil would be a little more due to less weight of outfit. I just assumed someone out here had tried it and was wondering how they fared. Besides lots of range time Id like to take a Black Bear with the 50/70....but with thoses Trapdoor sights looking at a black target Im afraid I would see nothin. Damn old eyes

I do not shoot a contender but I do have a C Sharps 1874 rifle in 50-70 and personally I can not think of a better cartridge for hunting big game with a BPCR that the 50-70. Sinch I bought the rifle I have killed a buffalo at 126 paces with a1 ahot and a large wild bore with one shot. The 50 cal seams to kill faster than a 45-70 does with black powder loads. If you want to shoot long range you need to shoot really heavy bullets to do the job and they will remind you what recoil is even with black powder.

Yeah, I really like my 50/70 Trapdoor. At 50-100 yds it plunks em right wher Im aiming if I hold it ok. I imagine it will drill through most game id hunt with

That is my 50 Alaskan Encore,, have no plans on shooting it with BP though, I do remember a few tales of the 209-50 cal encore frontstuffers leaking gas badly and the guts of the Encores being damaged pretty badly.
