I was wonder what loads you all use in 308 win. With unique. I have alot of this powder and just got into cb for rifles. Do i need to use a case filler, if so what do i use. I will be useing 165 gr bullets. What is a good lube to use. I currently only tumble lube with alox but i would like to try pan lubing. I am new to this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Start at 10 Gr. and work your way up to where you want to be as far as velocity.
Mine likes 13.5 Gr. with a 200 Gr. boolit.

You shouldn't need a filler with Unique as its bulky and easy to ignite.

Lyman 45th lists 10.0-15.0 Unique with a 173gr GC for 1368-1816fps. Most lubes should work on that velocity range.

I am using a Lee C309-160-R with a gas check lubed with Lar's Carn Red and sized to .309. I use military LC cases sized only with a Lee Collet Die and regular rifle primers. I use a Lee flaring tool to slightly open up the neck opening for easy insertion, regular Lee seating die, then a light crimp using a Lee Factory Crimp Die.

I tested with lots of Unique from 10.0 - 12.0 grains and have settle for a load of 11.0 grains. No fillers needed and I use a RCBS ChargeMaster for measuring the charges.

This is a soley dedicated round/load for my Ishapore 2A in 7.62NATO.. I can easily hit the 8"steel gong at 100 yards using my Williams Peep Sight. Once in a while I can get the 4"!

Best thing is I can reload them on the cheap and easily shoot 50 rounds with no pain. Lots of fun!

11 gr of Unique is generally my load also for 160 - 177 gr bullets. No filler or wad is used but I do use well fire formed cases with the flash holes drilled out (a #28). Velocity generally runs 1150 - 1250 fps.

I use basically the same laods as Larry and "Cheese"(11-12g wherever the measure stops close to that range anyhow) I get good uniformity with no drilled flash holes and use Win or Federal Lg pistol primers. My velocity from a 22" barrel with a 170g bullet is 1650fps with 12g (if i remember correctly, have to get out the chronograph book)..i am surprised you loads are that slow Larry. In the 30-06 my "standard" offhand load is 9g of Unique with a 180g bullet and it is 1150-1200 out of a 24" barrel.I ran the speedometer on it yesterday while checking soft vs hard lube in in cold weather. No conclusion there<G>

You mentioned tumble lubing, are you also using their push through die and using a GC?.If no GC i would start at 7-8g.Tumble lube Lee Alox is fine,as a good as pan lubing in my experience.

I'm not using any sizer at this time i was waiting for the bullets to come in that i traded for to see what diameter they were before i orderd one. My bore slugged .309 and i figured as long as they were no larger than .311 i coul lube and shoot them as they are.

try them as is with the alox and no GC.If they fit the throat and chamber go for it.use the 7-8 of Unique load. For a "sneaky load" use 2-2.5 of Unique and its a nice 50 foot and 25 yd gallery load and very quiet.

Jason50cal,

Where are you located in ohio. If your close to me I have several different sized molds you could try. I have only used 2400 in 3006 and 8mm but it works really good.

Born and raised in Scioto County. Good luck on your load development, I may be crazy but it's my favorite part of casting/reloading.

I like Unique, but use it mostly for handgun, or for hornet. I am very sensitive about the possibility of double charges of powder with larger rifle cases which includes 308. I use mostly 2400( about 20 gr up or down depending on blt) with one grain of dac fill. Never used any fill with unique, and as others say, do not use fill with unique or similar burning rate powders. Also being double charge concerned, if the charge does not fill over 1/2 the case, I weigh all finished loads on a small elect scale. To err is human, to not take all possible precautions to prevent double charging is at best foolish, at worst really stupid!

I use a 200gr Lee boolit and 11.1gr Unique and the sight set at 5 on my 03A3 two grove and it will keep the group at 1.75 at 100 yds, and recoil is like a 22.I do use a pinch of pillow fiber fill.

I agree. I know pistol powders are a very popular thing with boolits but it makes ME nervous.

I am in NO way saying it shouldn't be done, I just don't feel comfortable doing it with my loads.

About 50 years ago when I was learning to reload, my mentor encouraged me to charge one case, and then seat a bullet in that case. I've been doing that ever since, and have never owned a loading block. Some powders with some measures bear watching still since coarse powders can bridge on one load, and then dump the extra in the next load. Those powders I throw on the scale. It doesn't take that much longer, and I enjoy the process on cold, or stormy days. I worry about that more than about double charging. Doing things the same way evry time helps avoid errors too. I have used small charges of pistol powders for those 50 years, and though I'm still pretty cautious, I see no reason not to.

Here is a Unique load fired from my Springfield , 1903 -A3, 308 Win., with Lyman 48 and 17 A front sight. It has always been a super accurate rifle. I felt like it would be a good rifle to test the 311291's that had been pushed into the nose 1st sizing die made by Buckshot to evaluate them in the " accuracy dept."

The 311291's with the fat nose ( .305 " ) were pushed into Buckshot's Nose sizing die and resized to .302".

The distance is 50 yards and a 5 shot group. Needless to say , I can highly recommend Buckshot's nose sizing die !

Good morning
All my caliber .30 rifles get fed the RCBS 180 fn GC. Each .308 has a favorite Unique diet but somewhere about 12 grains accuracy starts looking good. Will not win any matches but out to 100 yards I would not hessitate to pop most any coyotee or other pest. The state of ILL does not permit a cartrige rifle to pop corn crunchers.

After reading these posts it seems that my 308 also prefers 11.0 grains of Unique as it's sweet spot. I had tried Unique in the past but never went up to 11 grains and the accuracy was dismal. I put together some 11.0 grain loads and tested them yesterday and 4- 5 shot groups averaged 3/4" at 50 yds in my Rem 700 HB. I was using a Lee 180 RN GC sized .310. I also used a bit of pilllow stuffing over the powder, more out of habit than anything else. I will try the load w/o that shortly. No chrono but the recoil was very light so velocity must be in the 1200 -1300 area??. It was a fun load to shoot with no discomfort on my arthritic shoulder.
