300 grain 44 special

Need advice for my ruger 44 special.........want to use 300 grain cast boolits for a "stopper" load. Something in the 1000 fps range........Flatbed[smilie=s:

300grs in a 44 special would be a good stopper even at 850 fps.[smilie=p:

I got an average of about 700 fps out of a 5 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk .44 Special using 9.5 grains of 2400, Wolf LP primer, and Lee 310 grain RFGC boolits. I am sure 1000 fps would be possible with some powder/primer/boolit combination. It would likely be well above regular .44 Special pressures. As Hickory suggests, 850 fps would likely do very well and be a lot easier to achieve.

I'm planning on using the PB version of the Lee 310 RF from the group buy that is running right now (see my signature for the link) in .44 Special. I'll be saving the GC version for .44 Magnum and .444 Marlin.

Ross Seyfried recently had a review/article in gunsamerica.com about Lipsey's .44 Special Ruger Bisley Flattop Blackhawk. In the 5-1/2" revolver he used H110 in Starline brass with Federal LP magnum primers to drive a 280 grain LBT WFN 1,120 fps @ 25'. Who needs a .45 Colt?

I would really hate for one of those to see a CA Bulldog, Rossi or Taurus. 300 gr cast levels are why I own a magnum.

I am very used to recoil. I have shot 1000's of full house 44 mag, 357 mag, and 45 colt loads, all using max charges and heavy bullets.

My goal is to have a FEW stoppers when I venture out where critters with bad attitudes might be encountered. These will not be every day shooting loads. I want to carry the 44 instead of the other heavy weights.

As for them finding their way into lesser guns, this will not happen as I intend to only assemble a few for my use in the Ruger.

I posted that I am looking for 1000 fps, but certainly 950 fps will also be effective.......so any recipes will be appreciated...........flatbed. :smile:
