I recently obtained a 41 magnum Marlin model1894 lever action rifle. I plan on molding my bullets for target practice. Does anyone have some good data for lead bullets. I find data for pistols. For rifles I have seen some data on jacketed bullets for rifles.

Norm:
Welcome to the CastBoolits.com.
I had one of those little rifles years ago.
I couldn't get it to shoot cast boolits worth a hoot.
It's the old story with the micro-groove rifling. It did well with the jacketed. I wish now that I
had not got rid of it. SWC boolits did not feed well. I had to fiddle with the lever to get them
to chamber. Your best bet would be the rfn bullets. Hornaday makes the 210 grain hp XTP
that would work well.
Heavy charges of slow powders will work best. The H110 or 296 would be my choice.

I will second that. The 41 is so under rated.

This is just an old wives tale! Micro groove will shoot as accurately as Ballard rifling IF you take the time to slug the barrel and throat of that Marlin rifle. Then you size your cast boolits to .001" to .002" larger and it will shoot as well as it does with jacketed. I know cause I have one of those Marlin 1894 FG's in .41 Remington magnum.

I am looking for one to go with my Ruger. I've had good luck with Lil Gun in the 41 Magnum. I have 225 gr. rnfp from Missouri Bullet Company and they do very well.

I use a Lyman 410639 in my M58. The reason I mention it is that it's a TC boolit. It SHOULD feed just fine in your Marlin. I bought it to feed from speedloaders, and until a GB started up recently for a pointed boolit, there were none better. It is a 170gr, tho'.
Come to think of it, the GB boolit might work. Go to the GB forum, and try the "pointy boolit" thread. There are drawings of the possible examples...several weights.
Have fun,
Gene

I want to find one of those 1885 Winchesters and have it rebored.
Anybody tired of their 38-55 yet?

I am just now getting back into casting but do shoot cast bullets through my Marlins. At this point I'm shooting the 255 Cast Performance WFN-GC with 22 grains of H110...superbly accurate...

50 yards sitting with peepsights...and it does it over and over again...

These are the other two....a S and a LTD...

RGS who posts over here has shot the 265 Keith that he bought on a group buy out of his FG...no complaints as to accuracy or feeding...

Rifle or pistol, it makes no difference. You'll get a little higher velocities from slower burning powders, but the load parameters are the same. Rifles don't get a higher pressure limit when loaded in the same caliber. It will naturally be a little faster than a revolver for the obvious reasons. Store bought cast bullets will likely disappoint you unless custom sized to your rifle. My Marlin liked cast bullets on the large side, and cast hard.

I have a Blackhawk and a Marlin in 41 mag and I load for the pistol, the rifle will shoot them a little faster.
I use H-110 with jacketed bullets with cast boolits i am trying 2400 and some 231.

The 220gr Saeco Truncated Cone bullet should work well in your rifle. Cast it at least 15BHN and size it .001" to .002" larger than bore size and it will probably be good for the throat also.
I have hit gallon milk jugs out to 200 yards with my scoped SBH Hunter. More consistent at 100 yards though.

My 1894S shoots well with the Lee 210gr TLSWC with 6 gr of #2 Improved. Ranch Dog has a bullet designed for the Marlin throat, mine doesn't feed them well but they shoot well at modest velocity, my mold is an early plain base.

I've loaded for several handgun/rifle combinations. If loading for max performance with cast bullets, PB'd ones in particular, I offer the following suggestion;

Develop loads staying within revolver loading data. Develop the load in the rifle for accuracy first as accuracy will go south with many PB cast bullets before top end revolver loads are reached. Accept that load in the revolver as most often it will shoot very well in the revolver also.

This is why I prefer a PB'd bullet for medium loads of 1100 fps or so out of the rifle and 850 - 950 fps out of a 6" revolver as I get excellent accuracy out of both rifle and revolver with that load. I then prefer a GC'd bullet for use with top end magnum loads as the best load for the revolver almost always gives excellent accutracy and velocity in the rifle. Bottom line is 2 moulds, a PB and a GC, will give the best performance over one mould trying to do everything.
