A buddy of mine was digging in his back yard and called me after he hit something. After we got it out of the hole, by the way I was acting he thought it was gold. I told him it was the next best thing............

The thing is 8" thick by 12" round. I need to get a hardness tester now. The " press WGT 15 OZ" has me baffled. Talk about luck the guy was putting up a single pole clothes line and hit this thing about 16" down. We had to dig a 3' wide by 2' wide hole so we could get our hands on it to move it. I was thinking it was a time capsule at first. I put a tow strap around it and drug it out of the hole with my truck. Mark

It looks more like "15 02" to me, but I'm not sure of the significance.

Antique weight lifting weight???? It looks like it would be part of a barbell.

The thing is 8" thick by 12" round.

If its lead at those dimensions it should be in the 350lb range.

Its either not lead, your numbers are off, or your scale is off.

You may have a 250lb rated scale thats maxed out

I see you have a scale rated at 400 lbs so thats not the problem.

Being in Florida I wonder if its an old Zinc anode?

I was guessin at the size, may be more like 11"X61/2" I allready cut it quarters. I was in a dazed state from the find.[smilie=w: Mark

Is that goo/lump in the middle look like hardened roofing tar?

Does it have any hint of a copper wire coming out of that goo/lump anywhere?

If it does it is likely an anode.

The writing makes me thing harmonic balancer for some type of flywheel or other kinda constant velocity press.

Those dimensions should make it weigh more if it is lead.

I think you got yourself a mystery there Scooby.:Fire:

Hit an edge with the torch and see what happens?????????

If he was a really really good friend I would go buy some grass seed and go fire up the backhoe.

Maybe a boundary marker?. When we first moved into our first home way back when, the previous owner had a bunch of fencing and other junk. Just dug one heck of a hole and buried it. Frank

I smelted it down and it seems to be soft lead. The darn thing was right in the middle of his yard. Mark

Lead doesn't leach into ground water. That is the sort of thing the enviro nuts are trying to use to shut down ranges and ban lead ammunition. We certainly don't need it posted here.

You smelted it down??? OH NO!!! It was part of the "hatch". What ever you do, do not turn any keys you might find in the yard....

Naah, it's a SALSI (Space Alien Landing Site Indicator).
Marks their approved barter sites, they bring lead and brass
to trade for pinto beans.

+1 on metal detector so you don't dig up the whole yard.
