I just picked up a T/C Encore in 308 Win, 1 :10 twist.
I cast for years for pistol, now I want to try for rifle.
Advise on which bullet mould I should pick up first?
(I know there will be many more)
Will be doing target more that hunting to start.
Thanks,
Paul in WNY
I've had good luck in my 788 in .308 with Lyman 311041 and 311291

So recommendation of 165 to 180 gr so far.
from what I've read these are fine 30-30 boolits.
Are they good for 308W too?

I use the RCBS 165 silhouette GC with 2400 in my TC Encore.

+1 On the RCBS 165, I also shoot alot of the SAECO #311 165 TC and LBT 180gr spitzer.

Catmandu, what do you want to do with the .308?

I think the above RCBS #82014 180gr. FP will shoot very well out of your 10" twist barrel. It shoots extremely well out of my Mauser 98 .308, good long bearing contact too, should suit 10 twist really well! I shoot it on paper targets, but i think it would be a nasty killer also! Good luck there is heaps to choose from in .30 cal. I would also recommend slugging your barrel to obtain appropriate sizing of your bullets if you are chasing fine accuracy.

180 gr LEE 2r gas checked over 32gr of BLC(2) gives me one inch groups at a hundred yards and around 2000 fps. No leading. Shot fifty of them this afternoon at the local gun club range. Two dry patches and the bore is spotless and shining pretty.

LEE .309 180 R w/gas check works fine for my 7.5 Swiss as well as my 308. Lube with LLA and JPW mixed fifty fifty and unsized except to seat the check. They drop at 309 and I use a .309 push through sizer to crimp on the checks the sizer barely touches the boolit driving bands and today I shot fifty of them with no leading at all and one inch groups at a hundred yards.

Thank you for all the replies.
To start off I will be doing 100/200 yard target shooting.
But I just want to have fun. I was hoping to get an accurate
consistant load so I can go have some fun. (not enough of that
lately)
I hoped to start with a good choice for that chambering. I know
that there will be a thread or group buy after that that I will
just have to have. :)
Again thanks for the info, now just to locate one and get
started.

Another vote for the 311291. It is very accurate in my .308 (and 7.5 Swiss and 7.62x54R) with IMR 3031.

Though I have shot more of the Lyman flatnosed boolits, I would look to the new style .30 cal molds with the shorter shank portions so you can seat the boolit flush with the base of the neck, and not have the gas check below the neck. Both the RCBS 165, and 180 look good along with the Lyman 165, and perhaps also the 311299 for longer ranges. An article in a recent Handloader magazine once again proved that accuracy was best if the gas check stayed in the neck of the case, or as close as posssible. Lee also makes molds for that type of boolit, but I don't know the numbeers off hand. The Lee C309-150-FN doesn't have too long a shank, and has also shot very well in every 30-30, 308, and 30-06 I've tried it in, but might come up lacking at 200 yards.

Good old 311284 is a winner in every 30 caliber rifle I have ever owned, except one persnickety 300Wbee.

On a whim, I loaded some Lee 155 gr. "AK" boolits for my Remington 788 and they shot really good with H-4895, so I tried them in both of my M1-As and they both loved them also.
It took about 29-30 gr. of H-4895 to function my M1-As. 28 gr. shot well in my 788 chambered in .308 Winchester. My boolits were "crimp on" wheel weights that were water quenched and sized to .312". Hope this helps, Tt.
